The Thixoforming Group in the Department of Engineering Materials at the University of Sheffield undertakes research and development into the forming of alloys and composites in the semi-solid state(SSM). This process is commonly called thixoforming(thixocasting or thixoforging) and possesses some of the advantages of both casting and forging. Initially the material behaves in the semi-solid condition like a solid(it can be picked up and holds it shape unsupported), but when injected into a die it flows like a liquid to take the form of the die accurately, as in die-casting. However, the structure is fine and uniform, virtually free of porosity, and the product may be heat-treated to give mechanical properties superior to those of castings. The thermal shock to the die is less than that given by a liquid, which means that higher melting point alloys-which cannot easily be diecast-may nevertheless be thixocast. 1, record 10, English, - thixoforming

The Royal Irish Constabulary(RIC) was one of Ireland's two police forces in the early twentieth century, alongside the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Londonderry(Derry) and Belfast had had their own forces, but problems, especially their involvement in sectarian violence, saw them both disbanded by 1870, and the RIC assumed their duties. It was disbanded in 1922 and replaced by two new police forces; the Garda Síochána in the Irish Free State(now the Republic of Ireland) and the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Northern Ireland. The force was predominantly Roman Catholic, although there were fewer Catholics in the higher ranks. The RIC' s policing system influenced the Canadian North West Mounted Police when the Canadian federal government was looking for a plausible way to establish order in the North-West Territories. 1, record 26, English, - Royal%20Irish%20Constabulary

Nearly all the identifying features of an inefficient suite of relief programmes relate to the transfer of control of the goods subject to the program. ICC [International Chamber of Commerce] believes that simplification is best achieved by limiting the number of times that control of the relief has to be transferred. Record number: 38, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Matric potential is the most important component in soil, but is more difficult to visualize. Water will not freely leave soil unless soil is very wet. This is because of adhesion and cohesion. Imagine placing a clump of dry soil on a table, then dropping a drop of water onto the clump of dry soil. If you elevate the soil off of the table, will the water leap out of it, dropping to the table? Of course not. It will stay in the soil, held by adhesion, or what we often call matric forces. The symbol for matric potential is [psi subscript m]. These values are negative or zero, but never positive, because this water is not free to move to the zero state.... The matric potential of a soil refers to the potential of the most easily removed molecule... 5, record 38, English, - capillary%20potential

The chemical potential of water is a quantitative expression of the free energy associated with the water. It is important to note that the chemical potential is a relative quantity. It is always expressed as the difference between the potential of a substance in a given state and the potential of the same substance in a standard state. An atomic absorption spectrophotometer measures element concentrations in solution by spraying(nebulising) the solution into a long narrow hot flame. Light from a hollow cathode lamp, containing the element to be analysed, passes above the long and narrow burner to a monochromator. The monochromator isolates ground state radiation from the hollow cathode lamp. The solution is sprayed into the fuel and air premixing chamber feeding the flame. Free atoms are produced in the flame because of the heat and reducing conditions. If the atoms are the same as the element in the lamp, then light is absorbed. The degree of absorption depends on the amount of that element present in the original solution. The results are compared with standard solutions which allow concentrations to be determined. The technique can be highly precise and accurate. 2, record 51, English, - atomic%20absorption%20spectrometer

The fermentation of solid substrates such as starchy or cellulosic materials can be approached in two different ways. The solid material can be suspended in an aqueous medium. A general problem with such preparations is that gelatinization of the starches, etc. can generate highly viscous broths causing poor mixing and O2 transfer at dry weight concentrations higher than 2% w/v. There is also the obvious diseconomy of adding so much water to the substrate only to remove it from the product. Alternatively, then, the problem is approached through 'solid state fermentation’, the growth of microorganisms on solid materials without the presence of free liquid. 3, record 58, English, - solid%20substrate%20fermentation

Such techniques can be divided into two basic types: thin layer and deep bed. In the former system, the organisms are grown on the surface of the substrate, which is spread on shallow trays about 2-4 cm deep; the trays are incubated in air-conditioned rooms or cabinets. The simplest deep bed systems consist of heaps of substrate that may be stirred periodically by hand. More sophisticated, fully automated systems include rotating drums, conveyor belt systems, which pass through air-conditioned tunnels, or deep tanks through which air is blown. The substrates used are generally based on wheat bran. 1, record 58, English, - solid%20substrate%20fermentation

MHO(Lesgold et al., 1987) is a system for learning principles of electricity that supports both free exploration and guided problem solving. Its tutoring component exploits the curriculum organization to implement the concept of steering testing. When it takes control of the interaction, MHO dynamically generates tasks-electrical circuits and questions about them-that have to fulfil two conditions. First, observing the student's performance on each task should maximize the information made available concerning possible changes in her knowledge state. Second, each task should concentrate on elements of the curriculum that are in the current focus so that diagnostic information can direct the course of instruction. 1, record 60, English, - steering%20testing
