Primary disinfection is the application of a disinfectant in the drinking water treatment plant, with a primary objective to achieve the necessary microbial inactivation. The efficacy of disinfection using chlorine can be predicted based on a knowledge of the residual free chlorine concentration, temperature, pH, and contact time. This relationship is commonly referred to as the CT concept and is used by public drinking water suppliers as one tool for ensuring adequate inactivation of organisms during disinfection. CT is the product of the residual concentration of disinfectant(C), measured in mg/L at the outlet of the contact chamber, and the disinfectant contact time(T), measured in minutes. The CT values required to achieve the necessary inactivation will depend on the microorganism targeted, pH, and temperature. 1, record 1, English, - CT%20concept

4, record 1, French, - crit%C3%A8re%20CT

Summer fallow is the practice of keeping land free of all vegetation throughout one season for the purpose of storing a part of the rainfall of that period in the soil for the use of crops the following year. Summer fallow has been practiced in various parts of the world for several centuries, and to a limited extent in some sections of western United States since the country was settled. It is a common practice in the light-rainfall sections of Canada and of the Pacific Northwest at the present time. 3, record 4, English, - cultivated%20summer%20fallow

The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact. 1, record 13, English, - International%20Campaign%20to%20Ban%20Landmines

1, record 13, French, - Campagne%20internationale%20pour%20interdire%20les%20mines

The most common type of CVT employs a steel belt and two pulleys. Rather than step among four or five gears of different sizes, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the drive pulley and driven pulley to create a broad range of drive ratios free of the shift feel of conventional transmissions. Imagine riding a bike on which the sprocket and rear gear magically change size without requiring the chain to jump from one gear to another, and you have the basic idea. By increasing or decreasing the space between the pulleys’ respective halves, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the conical inner surfaces on which the belt rides. It varies these parameters at any time, at any engine or vehicle speed. 4, record 25, English, - continuously%20variable%20transmission

In a positive-intrinsic-negative(PIN) diode, an intrinsic(non-doped) semiconductor is sandwiched between the positively and negatively doped semiconductor regions. The Immaculate Conception is a Catholic dogma that asserts that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was preserved by God from the stain of original sin at the time of her own conception. Specifically, the dogma says she was not afflicted by the lack of sanctifying grace that afflicts humankind, but was instead filled with grace by God, and furthermore lived a life completely free from sin. It is commonly confused with the doctrine of the incarnation and virgin birth, though the two deal with separate subjects. According to the dogma, Mary was conceived by normal biological means, but her soul was acted upon by God(kept "immaculate") in his constitution Ineffabilis Deus, published December 8, 1854. The Catholic Church celebrates the Immaculate Conception on 8 December, exactly nine months before the official birthday of Mary. 1, record 37, English, - Immaculate%20Conception

The rate of a heterogenous enzymic reaction is attenuated by the relative slowness of the substrate diffusion to the enzyme. By analogy to the well established chemical action of inhibitors, this phenomenon can be referred to as "diffusional inhibition". In the chemical engineering literature the effect of diffusional limitations on the catalyst activity is quantitatively expressed by the effectiveness factor, [eta], which measures the departure of V from Vkin and is defined by the following relationship: V = [eta]Vkin. Thus, the magnitude of diffusional inhibition is conveniently expressed by the reciprocal of the effectiveness factor, which is a complex function of the kinetic parameters, transport coefficient, and substrate concentration. 3, record 39, English, - effectiveness%20factor

The local-oscillator frequency is mixed with the input signal to produce an intermediate frequency (IF). The receiver has to have suitable pass band characteristics to deal with the pulse modulation side bands, and must be free from paralysis following reception of a large signal... Its output is rectified and amplified and applied to the cathode-ray tube display, either as a deflexion or an intensity modulation. The cathode-ray tube is also supplied with a range time base..., synchronized to the pulse transmission, and suitable calibration devices... are usually also necessary. The form of the display unit depends on the particular radar application, and on what coordinate or coordinates other than range are to be presented. For example, in the plan position indicator the time base starts from the centre of the tube and goes radically outwards in a direction depending on the azimuth of the beamed aerials(which sweeps continuously), and the signal is presented as a spot intensifier. 6, record 46, English, - cathode%2Dray%20tube%20display

When an ionizing particle enters the device, it collides with gas atoms and strikes electrons from their orbit around the nucleus of the gas atoms. In addition, an ionizing particle striking the outside of the tube can also knock electrons off the metal casing. In either case, these free electrons then are attracted to the positively charged central wire, gaining energy by the attraction. As they approach the wire they knock electrons off other atoms, creating an avalanche or cascade effect which results in a pulse of current large enough to be detected. A "quenching gas" is usually added to the filler gas so that these avalanches will dissipate over time and not continue indefinitely, which would cause inaccuracy or electronic failure. 1, record 47, English, - quenching%20gas

The movement of a free electron from atom to atom leaves a hole in the atom it left. This hole is quickly filled by another free electron. As this movement is transmitted throughout the conductor, an electric current is created from the negative to the positive. At the same time, the "hole" has been moved backward in the conductor as one free electron after another takes its place in a sort of chain reaction. "Hole flow" is from positive to negative. Current flow in a transistor, then, may be either electron movement or hole flow, depending on the type of material, and this determines the type of transistor it is as well. 2, record 59, English, - hole%20flow

When cetaceans decide to interact with whale watchers, the cetaceans should always remain in control of the situation : that is, they should be free to determine the duration and nature of any interaction. c) On a long-term basis, whale watching should not lead to changes in cetacean group behaviour or dynamics, a change in habitat use, or a decline in reproductive success. 1, record 60, English, - low%2Dimpact%20whale%20watching

2, record 60, French, - observation%20%C3%A9cologique%20des%20baleines

The Centre national d’études spatiales(CNES) is developing an atomic clock of unequaled precision, which will be launched in 2003 aboard the International Space Station(ISS). The PHARAO clock(Cooled Atom In-Orbit Atomic Clock Project)... uses cooled cesium atoms in order to reach an accuracy and stability 10 to 100 times higher than any other high-performance existing calibrating clocks. The Cesium atoms are thrown on a free flight in a cavity enabling interaction with a radio-frequency field. They then transfer their intrinsic accuracy and stability qualities to the piezoelectric oscillator. The lack of gravity increases the time in which the atoms interact with the piezoelectric oscillator, which then increases the resolution and accuracy of the clock by a 10 factor. PHARAO will belong to ESA's ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) payload within the frame of one of its ISS program. The ACES mission will be divided in two parts. The first one, which should last six months, will mostly focus on the PHARAO clock performance. The second part of the mission will last 12 months and will allow the international scientific community to use the clock for specific experiments(clocks’ synchronization, General Relativity tests, geodesy, etc.). 2, record 63, English, - ACES%20mission

4, record 69, French, - voyageur%20ind%C3%A9pendant

The use of the ha-ha, or sunken fence, to create and at the same time conceal the physical division between garden and contiguous park grounds(a division needed to keep grazing animals out of the garden) was a major step in the creation of the new, "natural" garden. Walpole explains the purpose of the visual unification : The contiguous ground of the park without the sunk fence was to be harmonized with the lawn within; and the garden in its turn was to be set free from its prime regularity, that it might assort with the wilder country without. 4, record 74, English, - ha%2Dha

1967. Three kinds of sets of the new-design(Canadian wildlife) coins were offered to collectors by the Royal Canadian Mint : 1. the familiar six-coin set in plastic, 2. a set in a red leather-covered case(containing a sterling silver medallion in addition to the standard six coins), and 3. a "gold set" in a black leather-covered case. The gold set contained the cent through the dollar and a twenty-dollar gold coin bearing the Coat of Arms of Canada on its reverse. The instrument consists of a smooth-walled cylinder in which is a piston. The piston is mechanically raised at a predetermined frequency and is allowed to fall freely back to its minimum position. Within the cylinder is an accurately machined orifice through which the measured material enters the cylinder when the piston is raised and is displaced by the weight of the piston on its free fall. Thus the measurement of the time required by the piston to displace the material through the orifice is directly proportional to the viscosity of the material. 1, record 85, English, - falling%2Dpiston%2Dtype%20viscosity%2Dmeasuring%20element

1, record 85, French, - viscosim%C3%A8tre%20%C3%A0%20piston%20tombant

There is a market : 6m Americans play(by mailing in cards) the ordinary TV version of "The Price is Right".... interactivity is simply a wheeze to push up its ratings. As always it's the poor and the working class who suffer the brunt of the patronizing attitude and the limitations on their freedom of choice. The rich will always be free. There was a time when working people listened and deferred to the middle-class teachers and preachers. They have now thrown off those shackles. They won’t allow them to be replaced by the new polytechnocracy, whatever its politics.(Source : The Times(London), 26 Sept. 1987, p. 8). 1, record 98, English, - polytechnocracy

When a new issue is sold there can sometimes be a delay before actual delivery. During this time, some buyers who may have placed orders for the issue may decide for some reason to sell. This decision can occur if the issue is in demand to the extent that bids materialize above the issue price. If a premium develops or is anticipated, a type of buyer can appear that is known as a free rider. This individual will try to buy the new issue in the hope of a quick profit, preferably without putting up any money. 2, record 99, English, - free%20rider

2, record 99, French, - %C3%A9cr%C3%A9meur
