Summer fallow is the practice of keeping land free of all vegetation throughout one season for the purpose of storing a part of the rainfall of that period in the soil for the use of crops the following year. Summer fallow has been practiced in various parts of the world for several centuries, and to a limited extent in some sections of western United States since the country was settled. It is a common practice in the light-rainfall sections of Canada and of the Pacific Northwest at the present time. 3, record 3, English, - cultivated%20summer%20fallow

Buddhism is a transformative teaching that encompasses various systems of philosophy(prajna), meditation(samadhi), and ethics(sila). Although Buddhism is often classified as a major world religion, this classification is disputed by some scholars. This is because a Buddha is not a god, nirvana(the Buddhist goal) is not a heaven, and a Buddha cannot save anyone through religion as there is no soul to save. The major goal is to be free from the cycle of suffering(samsara). 1, record 4, English, - Buddhism

Telephone saboteurs typically gain access to a company's toll free number or use access codes for long-distance telephone accounts that circulate through the computer "bulletin board" underground. The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact. 1, record 20, English, - International%20Campaign%20to%20Ban%20Landmines

1, record 20, French, - Campagne%20internationale%20pour%20interdire%20les%20mines

Computers for Schools(CFS) is a national, federal government-led program that operates in cooperation with all provinces and territories, the private and volunteer sectors. The program collects, repairs and refurbishes donated surplus computers from government and private sector sources and distributes them free to schools and libraries throughout Canada. CFS was co-founded in 1993 by Industry Canada and the Telephone Pioneers the largest industry-related volunteer organization in the world. Computers for Schools contributes to the government's Connecting Canadians initiative. Since its inception, CFS has provided more than 300 000 computers to schools and libraries in all provinces and territories. CFS now delivers in excess of 60 000 additional computers each year. In addition to coordinating computer donors and recipients, CFS oversees more than 55 repair and refurbishing centres throughout Canada, where surplus computers are cleaned, refurbished and prepared for delivery. Workshops are staffed by volunteers, including current and retired telecommunications professionals, and students. 2, record 25, English, - Computers%20for%20Schools%20Program

1, record 29, Spanish, - alterglobalizaci%C3%B3n

The Special Program of Assistance for Africa(SPA) was established in 1987 as a response to the economic crises of the debt-distressed countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. An informal association of donors, the SPA was intended to support the countries structural adjustment programs with the International Development Association and the International Monetary Fund. The SPA did respond to the challenge. Free of the restrictive formality of other fora, donors were able to test ideas and develop a mutual understanding. High-level donor representation provided the opportunity for meaningful interactions with World Bank and IMF policy makers. The SPA helped to channel substantial quick-disbursing aid. Through peer pressure, it improved donor procedures. It broadened its agenda to address structural impediments to broad-based development. It provided a platform for frank and open exchanges on Africa's economic and social policy issues. It facilitated a convergence of development assistance goals and practices while preserving flexibility. 1, record 33, English, - Special%20Program%20of%20Assistance%20for%20Africa

1, record 33, French, - Programme%20sp%C3%A9cial%20d%27assistance%20%C3%A0%20l%27Afrique

Even if all countries went on the same 16/1 ratio, any tendency for mines to pour out the two metals at substantially different rates would lead to the free market's bidding their price ratios to some figure other than 16/1; and in this case, by a form of what is known as Gresham's Law-"Cheap money drives out good"-the result would be that the cheapest metal in the market place would all be given to Treasuries of the different countries, and in effect the world be on a single standard again-that of the cheapest metal. 3, record 41, English, - Gresham%27s%20law

2, record 41, Spanish, - Ley%20de%20Gresham

In this groundwork for a biospheric systems ethics, human beings as well as historical communities qualify for the attribution of intrinsic value. That does not mean, however, that all things in the biospheric environment so qualify. Significantly, natural systems are not the only kind of entities we find in our world. There is a multitude of atoms and molecules that are not integrated in the functional structure of living systems and of the biosphere : they make up the atmosphere and the oceans, the rivers, lakes, soils, mountains and deserts of the globe. Together with the Sun-which provides the free energy that drives the planet's life processes-they constitute the physical environment of the biosphere and its subsystems. 1, record 48, English, - biospheric%20environment

The Export Ratio, which [economist Nuala Beck] often calls the National Trade Bloc Export Ratio, measures the percentage of a company's sales outside of its usual trading bloc. In a world that has so visibly fragmented into different blocs--the North American Free Trade Area, the European Economic Community, Asia-Pacific--it's more important than ever to get a fix on how well a company is doing outside of its traditional market. 1, record 55, English, - export%20ratio

During the past several decades the coastal States of the world have been extending seaward their claims to jurisdiction over what has traditionally been recognized as the free seas. Claims have been both geographical, applied to specific maritime areas enclosed by boundaries, and functional, pertaining to certain competences such as control over fishing or drilling for hydrocarbons on the continental shelf. The net effect of these claims has been the gradual partitioning of nearly one-third of the global ocean into various types of maritime zones. The process of expanding maritime claims, sometimes termed "creeping jurisdiction" or "the ocean enclosure movement", may be approaching a temporary plateau. 1, record 56, English, - ocean%20enclosure%20movement

1, record 56, French, - mouvement%20exclusiviste
