CONT

Another major thrust of AECL’s waste management research program has been testing the durability and performance of the various engineered barriers - the containers, the vaults, and the sealing material.

CONT

A package containing liquid radioactive material shall remain in conformity with the requirements of ... Regulations .... Particular attention should be directed to heat effects that may ... alter the arrangement, the geometric form, or the physical state of the radioactive contents or, if the material is enclosed in a can or receptacle, cause the can, receptacle or material to melt or be damaged....

CONT

Shallow land burial consists of excavating a trench, placing waste containers in the trench..., backfilling between the containers with sand or other free-flowing earthen material and covering the trench with earthen material.

DEF

Subject field(s)

DEF

A container that carries a quantity of material which is in a free-flowing liquid or dry state and contained within industrial packaging without the use of inner containers.

CONT

Intermediate bulk containers (IBCs), also called semibulk containers, are larger than conventional drums and heavy-duty shipping bags but smaller than a bulk vehicle (eg. a tanker truck). One of its major distinguishing features is the absence of protrusions (eg, bilges) for manual handling. It is, by definition, designed for mechanical handling ... IBCs contain the product directly, unlike box pallets ... which generally contain packaged products. IBCs are available in many different materials. Those that carry solids are generally made of rigid or collapsible metal, rigid plastics; corrugated paperboard; wood or reconstituted wood; heavy-duty coated fabric; or plastic-tape fabric. Those that carry liquids are generally made of rigid metal; rigid plastic; corrugated paperboard; or flexible materials (eg, rubber-coated fabric, or polyurethane film).

CONT

The simplest form of engineered trench, or shallow land burial, relies mainly on the properties of the excavated overburden and the geohydrologic properties of the site for containment.... Shallow land burial consists of excavating a trench, placing waste containers in the trench up to a prescribed level, but generally below the original ground surface, backfilling between the containers with sand or other free-flowing earthen material and covering the trench with earthen material.

CONT

LLW [low-level wastes] disposal to date in the USA has been almost entirely by what is commonly called shallow land burial (SLB), i.e., unlined trenches.

CONT

In France, low and medium level waste have been disposed of by shallow land burial at the La Manche disposal centre since 1969. Two types of manmade structures are used for the disposal of conditioned waste: - monoliths ...; - tumuli ....

CONT
