There are three main methods to achieve highlights... Freehand techniques involve the placement of a lightening compound directly onto clean, styled hair. The lightener can be applied with a tint brush, an applicator bottle, or even with gloved fingers. Effects are extremely subtle, and can be used effectively to draw the attention to waveline, an upsweep movement, etc.

The ball-flower is a decorative detail in stone masonry that came to Britain with the Normans. Ball-flowers are unique; no two are identical. They were carved largely freehand, often quite crudely, and so are as individual as the mason's own handwriting. Though based on a standard pattern of three petals surronding a central ball, some rogue four-petalled examples occur. Hereford Cathedral is famous for its tower decorated with thousands of carved stone ball-flowers, having probably the largest number of them to be found on one building anywhere in the world.

Cependant, si l'on excepte le croquis rapide, destiné simplement à jeter des idées sur le papier, le croquis à main levée doit comporter toute précision utile à l'exécution des dessins plus poussés, qui seront exécutés d'après lui, soit à main levée (études) ou aux instruments (avant-projet, dessin d'exécution). Par conséquent, les cotes, les dimensions, les rapports doivent être exacts afin qu'il n'y ait pas de confusion possible lors de la mise au net.
