CONT

Also called ice quakes or cryoseisms, the cracking or booming sounds occur when moisture below ground starts to freeze and expand. As it does, it can move rocks and soil, occasionally causing them to crack, thereby producing the loud sounds that have been keeping people up at night.

French

CONT

DEF

A bulletin issued by [local forecast] offices to alert the public to expected formation of thin ice on plants, trees, etc., when temperatures are expected to drop to between 30°F and 40°F. Since air temperature sensors are located 5 feet above ground level, frost will often occur when air temperature sensors indicate about 36°F. A bulletin may be issued indicating "Scattered Frost" or "Frost in low lying areas".

OBS

Frost describes the formation of thin ice crystals on the ground or other surfaces in the form of scales, needles, feathers, or fans. Frost develops under conditions similar to dew, except the temperatures of the Earth's surface and earthbound objects falls below 32°F. As with the term "freeze, "this condition is primarily significant during the growing season. If a frost period is sufficiently severe to end the growing season or delay its beginning, it is commonly referred to as a "killing frost. "Because frost is primarily an event that occurs as the result of radiational cooling, it can occur with standard observing level temperature(at 5 feet above ground) in the mid to upper 30's.

OBS

In consulted sources, "frost warning" and "frost advisory" are defined in the same manner. However, Environment Canada differentiates a "warning" from an "advisory": "A weather advisory is issued when forecast conditions are expected to cause general inconvenience or concern, and do not pose a serious enough threat to issue a weather warning. An advisory will often precede a warning."

DEF

CONT

Avertissement; avis météorologique. [...]

In vitro freezing of tissue. Early attempts at studying the effects of speed and final temperature of freezing of tissue slices on cellular damage had difficulty in separating these parameters. Rubinsky and co-workers developed a method of controlled freezing of tissue slices on a microscope slide moving along a temperature gradient between two constant temperature bases. They were able to freeze animal and human liver tissue with a constant cooling rate. Their experiments revealed that high cooling rates will result in intracellular ice formation and probably immediate cell death, representing the clinical situation very close to the cryoprobe. Lower cooling rates resulting in cellular dehydration and extracellular ice formation with large ice crystals propagating along the sinusoids, expanding them by a factor of two in diameter.

Fog formed when water vapor is added to air which is much colder than the vapor’s source; most commonly, when very cold air drifts across relatively warm water.

CONT

Steam fog [is] a type of advection fog that is produced by evaporation when cool air passes over a warm wet surface and the fog rises, giving the appearance of steam.

CONT

Fogs formed by evaporation [evaporation fogs] - when saturation of air in contact with the ground occurs by addition of water vapor. Two types, steam fog and frontal fog.

CONT

Evaporation fog occurs when you get cold air advection over warm water or warm, moist land surfaces resulting in fog formation as water evaporates into the cold air. This type of fog is sometimes called steam fog or sea smoke.

OBS

steam fog: Also called sea smoke when it occurs over the ocean [a body of saltwater]. An example is Arctic Sea Smoke.

OBS

According to some authors: "steam fog" is also called sea smoke (arctic sea smoke, antarctic sea smoke), frost smoke, water smoke, sea mist, steam mist.

OBS

Steam fog is commonly observed over lakes and streams on cold autumn mornings, as well as in polar regions.

OBS

frost smoke : Same as steam fog.... [Frost smoke has also another meaning :] Steam fog... is sometimes confused with "ice fog" but its particles are entirely liquid. At temperatures below-29°C(minus 20°F), these may freeze into droxtals and create a type of ice fog that may be known as "frost smoke".

OBS

Note, also, that although advection of air is necessary to produce steam fog, it differs greatly from an advection fog in the usual sense, which is caused by warm, moist air moving over a cold surface.

  • warm water fog

Proulx).

Glaze and rime ice are names given to the ice that forms on an airplane’s windshield, its propeller and other aerodynamic surfaces as an airplane flies through supercooled rain droplets.
