When hunters broke through melting ice, they removed their duffle socks, beat them with a stick to remove excess water, allowed them to freeze, and pounded the remaining ice out of the undercoat before putting the socks on again.

CONT

Duffle socks or duffles were an invention of northern Canadians based on white trappers observing Native peoples making a thick boot lining of ... blanket material cut in strips.

Automatic drain valves open by themselves each time the pressure drops in the pipe. So at the end of each irrigation cycle the automatic drain valves will open and the water left in the pipes will drain out.... The wear and tear caused by the automatic drain valves is less expensive than replacing pipes that broke in a freeze.

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

Enzyme immobilization method is based on the formation of covalent bonds between enzyme molecules, by means of bi- or multi-functional reagents, leading to three-dimensional crosslinked aggregates which are completely insoluble in water but which do not require the use of water insoluble carriers. This method involves the addition of the appropriate amount of crosslinking agent to an enzyme solution under conditions which give rise to the formation of multiple covalent bonds.

CONT

Biologically active substances such as enzymes are immobilized in the pores of a porous support material by introducing a solution of the biologically active substance into the pores of the support material, treating the active substance in the pores to temporarily retain the active substance in the pores and immobilizing the active substance in the pores by crosslinking. Temporary retention of the active substance in the pores may be carried out by precipitation with a precipitating agent or by freeze drying.

OBS

Optimum conditions for obtaining maximum insolubility whilst retaining high enzymic activity must unfortunately be determined for each system by trial and error until sufficient is known about the enzyme’s primary, secondary, and tertiary structures to allow prediction of the best conditions which will exhibit minimal distortion of the enzyme upon its reaction to give a crosslinked immobilized enzyme.

  • Sciences biologiques
DEF

Making of ice cream. The next step, freezing the mix, is accomplished by one of two methods : continuous freezing, which uses a steady flow of mix, or batch freezing, which makes a single quantity at a time. For both methods, the objective is to freeze the product partially and, at the same time, incorporate air. The freezing process is carried out in a cylindrical barrel that is cooled by a refrigerant...

CONT

Glaze and rime ice are names given to the ice that forms on an airplane’s windshield, its propeller and other aerodynamic surfaces as an airplane flies through supercooled rain droplets.

CONT

The rain droplets fall through the cold layer and reach the ground as supercooled liquid(water droplets at a temperature below 0°C), or, as a mixture of liquid and ice. As they land on cold objects such as tree branches, hydro lines, etc. the supercooled rain droplets spread out and freeze almost immediately, forming a smooth thin layer of ice...

CONT

So supercooled raindrops stay liquid until they hit something hard, when they turn into a dangerous and beautiful layer of clear ice, covering roads, wires, trees, and buildings.

At this point in the client/team relationship, a sufficient visual language should have been developed to the point of common understanding. The lead designer should immediately implement the necessary changes and, upon client approval, formally declare "Design Freeze" (Design Freeze is ABSOLUTE and cannot be changed by anybody but the lead designer. Any and all recommendations beyond that point will be duly noted but not implemented in the current version of the design without the expressed approval of the lead designer.) and begins writing the Visual Design Spec.

CONT

GM's goal is to turn out new cars, trucks and sport wagons at a record pace. Currently the automaker is trying to complete 21 future vehicle programs, such as the H2, in just 24 months from design freeze to Job 1, half the time GM took in the past.

DEF

A technique used to stabilise fine-grained soils or coarser soils where normal methods of groundwater control might cause stability problems, to allow of excavation below the water table. Freezing imparts strength and impermeability to the ground and can be carried out either by circulating cooled brine through tubes(freeze probes) in the ground or by applying a refrigerant(e. g. liquid nitrogen) directly into the probe and allowing it to evaporate at the primary point where cooling is required.

CONT
