Record 5 2010-03-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
CONT

It's turning out to be a cold winter. This past week, the day time temperature has gone above freezing every day but the night time temperature has dropped into the teens. This is when the mulch pays off by protecting the bud union and lower canes from the freezing and thawing cycles.

Key term(s)
  • nighttime temperature
  • nocturnal temperature

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
CONT

Record 6 2007-10-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Conditions of melt followed by conditions of freezing, either within the snowpack or the atmosphere.

CONT

When the sun is sufficiently strong to melt the top layers of the snowpack during the day and when nighttime temperatures fall below 0°C, cycles of freezing and thawing will occur. In this process, called melt-freeze metamorphism, smaller grains will melt before large ones and so, during the course of a number of melt-freeze cycles, larger grains will grow at the expense of smaller ones.

CONT

The mountains are under the influence of a melt-freeze cycle. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

melt-freeze cycle: term officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

Thousands of restaurants, hotels, bars, and retailers use our products. Our granita machines are just what you need to serve your customers delicious cold treats. Originating in Italy, granita is also called "granizado" in some Spanish-speaking countries, and is sometimes called Italian Ice in the United States. Like ice cream, granita is a cold delight often employed as a desert : a nice cooler for a hot day or an elegant palate cleanser for a fancy meal. Unlike ice crea, granita does not derive from dairy products. It is more often based on fruit juice, vegetable juice, wine, coffee or liqueur with sugar mixed in. Freezing give granita a characteristic rough granular texture.
