FREEZING DESIGN [3 records]

Record 1 2016-02-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wastewater Treatment
CONT

Sludge frezing for dewatering. The effects of sludge freezing have been recognized for over 50 years, but until recently a generally applicable design procedure was not available.... A cycle of freezing and thawing converts sludge from a jelly-like consistency to a granular material that drains readily.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glaciology
  • Polar Geography
CONT

Distribution of Permafrost.- Permafrost underlies more than 50% of the ground surface of Canada. The two major divisions of permafrost are continuous permafrost and discontinuous permafrost. In the continuous permafrost zone, permafrost occurs everywhere beneath the ground surface except large bodies of water. In the far north, it may be more than 500 m thick. The discontinuous permafrost zone is broken into two other divisions: the widespread permafrost zone, where permafrost underlies 50-90% of the land area, and the sporadic permafrost zone, where it occurs mostly inpeatlands and underlies 10-50% of the land area.

CONT

The total annual freezing index has been used to predict permafrost distribution, and the design freezing index is commonly used in engineering to estimate the maximum thickness of lake ice and the maximum depth of frost penetration in the ground.

CONT

  • Casting and Patternmaking (Metal Processing)
DEF

A metal plate inserted in the surface of a sand mold or placed in the mold cavity to rapidly cool and solidify the casting, producing a hard surface.

CONT

Sand casting.(...) Design considerations for risers include their location, shape, and size, together with factors such as the use of chills(metal inserts to increase the freezing rate at certain locations to prevent formation of voids in the casting)(...)
