Distribution of Permafrost.- Permafrost underlies more than 50% of the ground surface of Canada. The two major divisions of permafrost are continuous permafrost and discontinuous permafrost. In the continuous permafrost zone, permafrost occurs everywhere beneath the ground surface except large bodies of water. In the far north, it may be more than 500 m thick. The discontinuous permafrost zone is broken into two other divisions: the widespread permafrost zone, where permafrost underlies 50-90% of the land area, and the sporadic permafrost zone, where it occurs mostly inpeatlands and underlies 10-50% of the land area.

The total annual freezing index has been used to predict permafrost distribution, and the design freezing index is commonly used in engineering to estimate the maximum thickness of lake ice and the maximum depth of frost penetration in the ground.

Weather observations at Gander are taken from two locations. The primary observation site is located on the roof of the terminal building; a second observation site is located at ground level about 200 feet from the terminal building. When freezing precipitation is present or suspected, weather observers use an ice accretion indicator composed of a small piece of aluminum alloy similar to that found in aircraft structure. It is placed outside at the observation site and inspected for the presence of freezing precipitation at each observation. Mandatory weather observations are taken every 30 minutes, at the hour and half hour. When freezing precipitation is present, the indicator is removed and a new one installed at each mandatory observation. Prior to installation, the indicator is pre-cooled to ambient temperature. Thus, when observed at the next observation following installation, the indicator shows the type and quantity of freezing precipitation which occurred in the previous 30 minutes.

Freezing fog may not always deposit rime or glaze on the "Ice Accretion Indicator", however if rime or glaze are evident, it positively indicates the presence of super-cooled water droplets and thus freezing rain, freezing drizzle or freezing fog is occurring. Freezing fog creates a significant risk of airframe icing and is therefore very important operational information for forecasters, pilots, flight service specialists, observers, communicators and others.

Frost jacking results from basal or vertical freezing pressures acting on the underside of a foundation, structure or object, or from adfreezing of soil to the sides of these objects. The cumulative upward movement over a period of time(one or several freeze-thaw cycles) may result in the foundation unit or object being ejected from the ground.

Frost-jacking-When heaving occurs..., if a structure imbedded in the ground is not properly anchored to resist such movement, the structure will be forced upward along with the ground surface. In most cases, the structure does not return to its original position when the active layer thaws during the following summer. The net upward movement is called "jacking. "This phenomenon can occur whenever there is seasonal freezing and thawing of the active layer, and is not limited to permafrost areas.

A technique used to stabilise fine-grained soils or coarser soils where normal methods of groundwater control might cause stability problems, to allow of excavation below the water table. The radio rack cooling fan is installed in the forward end of the left utility tunnel, in a section of ducting that bypasses the radio rack cooling overboard exhaust ducting.... The fan is used to create a flow of cooling air through the electrical and electronic equipment installations when the airplane is on the ground.
