Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
CONT

Soft rime is a white ice deposition that forms when the water droplets in light freezing fog or mist freeze to the outer surfaces of objects, with calm or light wind... Soft rime formations have the appearance of white ice needles and scales; they are fragile and can be easily shaken off objects. Factors that favour soft rime are small drop size, slow accretion of liquid water, high degree of supercooling, and fast dissipation of latent heat of fusion.

CONT

Record 3 2004-11-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Greatest distance at which a black object of suitable dimensions can be seen and recognized against the horizon sky during daylight or could be seen and recognized during the night if the general illumination were raised to the normal daylight level.

CONT

In Seagull_Vis 4000, the visibility of space objects is naturally influenced by pre-set general meteorological visibility conditions, such as fog, rain, and snow; as well as the pre-set cloud density.

CONT

According to the National Weather Service, some of the obstructions to visibility include blowing and widespread dust, fog(including freezing fog and patchy fog), haze, mist, sand and blowing sand, smoke, blowing spray, and volcanic ash. It is reported as "X" in an observation and on the METAR.

OBS

Visibility is reported as statute miles, hundreds of feet or meters.

PHR

Meteorological visibility at night.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

PHR

Visibilidad nocturna.

Record 4 2003-11-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

Meteor consisting of an ensemble of liquid or solid water particles falling through or suspended in the atmosphere, blown by the wind from the Earth’s surface or deposited on objects on the ground or in the free air.

OBS

[Examples of hydrometeors. ] Liquid or solid water formation that is suspended in the air includes clouds, fog, ice fog, and mist. Drizzle and rain are examples of liquid precipitation, while freezing drizzle and freezing rain are examples of freezing precipitation. Solid or frozen precipitation includes ice pellets, hail, snow, snow pellets, snow grains, and ice crystals. Water vapor that evaporates before reaching the ground is virga. Examples of liquid or solid water particles that are lifted off the earth's surface by the wind includes drifting and blowing snow and blowing spray. Dew, frost, rime, and glaze are examples of liquid or solid water deposits on exposed objects.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
DEF
