FREEZING NUCLEI [5 records]

Record 1 2020-07-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
  • Glaciology
DEF

[A] nucleus which sets up the formation of ice crystals in the atmosphere ...

CONT

An ice nucleus may be either a freezing nucleus or a sublimation nucleus. Recent studies of ice nucleation strongly indicate that natural ice nuclei, whatever their exact physicochemical nature, are freezing nuclei rather than sublimation nuclei.

OBS

ice nucleus; ice-forming nucleus; ice-producing nucleus: The plural form of "nucleus" is "nuclei."

Key term(s)
  • ice nuclei
  • ice-forming nuclei
  • ice-producing nuclei

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
  • Glaciologie
DEF

Noyau donnant naissance à de la glace [...]

CONT

Record 2 2010-03-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Freezing which occurs in the absence of freezing nuclei.

CONT

If only water is involved in either the process of condensation or freezing then that process is called either HOMOGENEOUS condensation or HOMOGENEOUS freezing. Most condensation or freezing, however, involves more than just water. Most often particulates(often called aerosols) serve as nuclei to initiate the process. In this case the process is a HETEROGENEOUS process.

OBS

This process is not important in the atmosphere.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

OBS

Homogeneous condensation occurs at relative humidity values greater than 440%.

This process is not important in the atmosphere.

Record 4 2003-10-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Thermodynamics
  • Glaciology
  • Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics (Physics)
DEF

The temperature at which a liquid solidifies under the influence of a particular set of conditions.

OBS

It may or may not be the same as the melting point or the more rigidly defined true freezing point or(for water) ice point. It is not an "equilibrium" property of a substance; it applies to the liquid phase only. The freezing point is somewhat dependent upon : the "purity" of the liquid; the volume and shape of the liquid mass; the availability of freezing nuclei; and the pressure acting upon the liquid.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Thermodynamique
  • Glaciologie
  • Mécanique des fluides et hydraulique (Physique)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)

DEF

Nucleus on which the freezing of water occurs.

CONT

Freezing nuclei are thus special forms of ice nuclei which nucleate the liquid phase, while the other type, sublimation nuclei, nucleate the vapor phase in starting the growth of an ice crystal.
