3, record 1, Spanish, - anticongelante

Outlast was developed for NASA and is consistently used in maier sports jackets as the material with automatic air-conditioning. Millions of microscopic PCM (phase change material) capsules store warmth during body activity and distribute them in the rest period. They thus ensure reliable temperature management and prevent large temperature fluctuations in the clothing, even when activity levels or the outside temperature vary. 4, record 6, English, - phase%2Dchange%20microcapsule
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 OBS
When the encapsulated PCM [phase change material] is heated to the melting point, it absorbs heat energy as it goes from a solid state to a liquid state. This phase change produces a temporary cooling effect in the clothing layers... The heat energy may come from the body(e. g. when the wearer first dons the garment) or from a warm environment. Once the PCM has completely melted, the storage of heat stops. If the PCM garment is worn in a cold environment where the temperature is below the PCM's freezing point, and the fabric temperature drops below this transition temperature, the micro-encapsulated liquid PCM will change back to a solid state, generating heat energy and a temporary warming effect... The developers claim that this heat exchange produces a buffering effect in clothing, minimizing changes in skin temperature and prolonging the thermal comfort of the wearer. 5, record 6, English, - phase%2Dchange%20microcapsule

Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense (lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond’s surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn." 5, record 8, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation. 2, record 8, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
turnover : A phenomenon usually occurring in spring and fall because of the increase in density of water above and below the temperature of minimum density. In the spring, as the surface of the water warms above the freezing point, the water increases in density, becomes heavier, and tends to sink, producing vertical currents, while in the fall, as the surface water becomes colder and therefore heavier, it also tends to sink. Phase transitions.... Discontinuous transitions involve a discontinuous change in the entropy at the transition temperature. A familiar example of this type of transition is the freezing of water into ice. As water reaches the freezing point, order develops without any change in temperature. Hoarfrost [is] a deposit of interlocking ice crystals formed by direct sublimation on objects, usually those of small diameter freely exposed to the air, such as tree branches, plant stems and leaf edges, wires, and poles. Also, frost may form on the skin of an aircraft when a cold aircraft flies into warm and moist air or when it passes through air that is supersaturated with water vapor. Hoarfrost is formed similarly to the way dew is formed except that the temperature of the frosted object must be below freezing. Frost forms when air with a dew point below freezing is brought to saturation by cooling. In addition to its formation on freely exposed objects(air hoar), hoarfrost also forms inside unheated buildings and vehicles, in caves, in crevasses(crevasse hoar), on snow surfaces(surface hoar), and in air spaces within snow, especially below a snow crust(depth hoar). Hoarfrost is more fluffy and feathery than rime, which in turn is lighter than glaze. Hoarfrost is designated light or heavy(frost) depending upon the amount and uniformity of deposition. 6, record 18, English, - hoar%20frost

The melting point of a substance should be considered a property of its crystalline form only. At the melting point the liquid and solid forms of a substance exist in equilibrium. All substances of crystalline nature have their characteristic melting points. For very pure substances the temperature range over which the process of fusion occurs is very small. The melting point of a pure crystalline solid is a function of pressure; it increases with increasing pressure for most substances. However, in the case of ice (and a few other substances) the melting point decreases with increasing pressure ... Under a pressure of one standard atmosphere, the melting point of pure ice is the same as the ice point, that is, 0°C. 7, record 24, English, - melting%20point

It is due to the increase in density of water above and below 39. 2°F(4°C, the temperature of minimum density). 2, record 29, French, - %C3%A9chelle%20de%20temp%C3%A9rature

A technique used to stabilise fine-grained soils or coarser soils where normal methods of groundwater control might cause stability problems, to allow of excavation below the water table. Freezing imparts strength and impermeability to the ground and can be carried out either by circulating cooled brine through tubes(freeze probes) in the ground or by applying a refrigerant(e. g. liquid nitrogen) directly into the probe and allowing it to evaporate at the primary point where cooling is required. 1, record 50, English, - ground%20freezing

C'est le cas de la congélation à la saumure; circulation d'un liquide frigorigène dont la détente (ébullition) produit du froid directement au niveau du congélateur.
