Ice meter ... Objective methods of the icing measurements are based on the icing weight determination related to the unit of area (in meteorology) or to the unit of length (in power supply). The hard rime was determined with the aid of the so-called icing meter bars. They were represented by two wooden bars of 32 mm diameter and 1 m length, i.e. the surface area equals 0,1 m² per 1 bar. Bars were placed horizontally and perpendicularly to each other. First of them was oriented in north - south direction, the second east - west. The amount of water was measured and result recalculated to kg.m-². These ice meter bars made possible quite reliable evaluation of the icing without having the continual measurement. Nevertheless they are not used contemporary in the meteorological service. 3, record 12, English, - ice%20meter

A tipping bucket rain gage consists of a funnel and a rocker mechanism with two little "buckets" on it, located underneath the funnel. When rain falls into the funnel, it fills one of the little buckets on the rocker mechanism. Once a given amount of rain falls into the funnel, usually 0. 01 inches, the rocker "tips" over, emptying one of the buckets and moving the other one underneath the funnel. A recorder in the gage records each tip and the time it occurred. The tipping bucket gage has its disadvantages, however. Weather observations at Gander are taken from two locations. The primary observation site is located on the roof of the terminal building; a second observation site is located at ground level about 200 feet from the terminal building. When freezing precipitation is present or suspected, weather observers use an ice accretion indicator composed of a small piece of aluminum alloy similar to that found in aircraft structure. It is placed outside at the observation site and inspected for the presence of freezing precipitation at each observation. Mandatory weather observations are taken every 30 minutes, at the hour and half hour. When freezing precipitation is present, the indicator is removed and a new one installed at each mandatory observation. Prior to installation, the indicator is pre-cooled to ambient temperature. Thus, when observed at the next observation following installation, the indicator shows the type and quantity of freezing precipitation which occurred in the previous 30 minutes. 2, record 18, English, - ice%20accretion%20indicator

Float-type gauges are essentially water level gauges. A float in the gauge receptacle rises as rain water enters the chamber, the rise of the float being recorded by a pen on a suitably calibrated, clock-driven chart. Wet snow avalanches develop in the same manner as dry snow avalanches but have no powder cloud. The moving snow is dense ... Wet snow avalanches tend to flow in channels and are easily deflected by irregularities in the terrain. After wet flowing motion stops, deposited debris commonly has channels and ridges on the surface. Because of their high density, wet avalanches are much more difficult to fight against than dry avalanches. 2, record 21, English, - wet%2Dsnow%20avalanche

Avalanches can also be characterized as being either "wet" or "dry" based on the amount of free water in the snow. Free water is liquid water, from melting or rain, that is present between the frozen crystals of a snow layer. WeatherAlert is an Environment Canada weather message about impending severe weather that scrolls--or crawls--across the bottom of the television screen. Only severe weather events that are not forecast early enough for announcement on regular television broadcasts will trigger WeatherAlert messages. Test messages for WeatherAlert will be issued in the greater Toronto pilot area for these severe weather events : tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, severe winds, blizzards, heavy freezing rain, heavy snow, heavy rain and snow squalls. The Toronto area was chosen for the pilot because of its size, variety of severe weather, population and its concentration of national broadcasters. 1, record 33, English, - WeatherAlert

1, record 33, French, - Alerte%20M%C3%A9t%C3%A9o

runback: The condition in which water runs back from the leading edge to freeze in a colder zone, caused either by the liberation of latent heat from supercooled droplets to an extent that the droplets remain liquid and run back, or by insufficient heat being supplied to the leading edge to evaporate all the water there so that some of it runs back. The signal change also created a potential concern. Although the revision reduced the size of all leading edge accumulation ice shapes, the issue of potential runback ice was raised since the system is activated with only a thin level of ice buildup. 3, record 34, English, - runback%20ice

Freezing rain, freezing drizzle and mixed conditions may result in extreme ice build-up on protected surfaces exceeding the capability of the ice protection system. Freezing rain, freezing drizzle, mixed conditions and descent into icing clouds from above freezing temperatures may result in runback ice forming beyond protected surfaces. This ice cannot be shed and it may seriously degrade performance and control of the airplane. 4, record 34, English, - runback%20ice
