The name, "pari-mutuel"... is significant because it describes the system. Derived from the French meaning "between ourselves", the free English translation became "to wager between ourselves". Under the pari-mutuel system, all of the money bet, less statutory deductions, is divided among the winning betters in the proportion of the amount bet. Pari-mutuel betting is considered the fairest system of betting known and is generally credited with the elimination of bookmaking and bookmakers at race tracks.

Money made by affixing, to the back of ordinary playing cards, the seal of the Treasurer in wax and the signatures of the Governor and Intendant, and first issued in 1685 by French colonial authorities as a remedy against the scarcity of regular currency. Full cards, half cards, quarter cards, and even portions of clipped cards were used. Even if meant to be a temporary financial expedient, card money nevertheless was used as a medium of exchange for a period of approximately 75 years.

Night Zoo(French : Un zoo la nuit) is a multiple award winning 1987 Canadian film. It is directed and written by Jean-Claude Lauzon. The drama made its debut at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. Marcel(Gilles Maheu) is released from prison, hoping to reconcile with his dying Father Albert(Lebel). Marcel is also harassed by a corrupt gay cop. Marcel returns to his Father who reveals that he has money and drugs stashed away for him. Marcel and his gay former cellmate both corner the corrupt cop and get their revenge on him. Julie(Adams) is Marcel' s former girlfriend who works in a sex club peep show.

Un ancien taulard violé dans sa cellule retrouve son père avec lequel il parviendra enfin à éprouver de l'affection et à communiquer. Il doit échapper à des policiers corrompus qui savent qu'il avait caché quelque part une importante somme d'argent et de la cocaïne pour la durée de son incarcération. Alors que le père est mourant, son fils lui organise une dernière partie de chasse à l'orignal. Il l'apporte au zoo, où il pense être certain d'en trouver un. Lorsqu'il constate son erreur, il suggère à son père de tuer l'éléphant. La scène est envoûtante, mêlée à la voix de Jacques Brel qui chante Voir un ami pleurer. Un zoo la nuit montre l'humanité et l'amour, à travers la nuit et le désespoir.
