The "Outaouais Regional Community" (ORC) created on January 1, 1970 by and Act of 1969 of the Assemblée législative du Québec and whose name was changed to "Communauté régionale de l’Outaouais" (CRO) in 1983 and to "Communauté urbaine de l’Outaouais" (CUO) in 1986, ceased to exist on January 1, 2002 with the creation of the new city of Gatineau.

On January 1, 2002, the towns and cities which were grouped, since January 1, 1970, under the Communauté urbaine de l’Outaouais (CUO), sometimes called "the Greater Hull," became one city. The new city of Gatineau comes from the merger of the town of Aylmer, the cities of Buckingham, Gatineau, Hull and the town of Masson-Angers.

Hull was the centre-city of the CUO but the name "Gatineau" had been chosen for the new city, the names of the previous towns and cities becoming names of "sectors." The municipal administration of the new city works from the Maison du Citoyen, the city hall of the previous City of Hull.

After 1983, no English name was official for the urban community; consequently "Outaouais Urban Community" has never been the name of the administrative body. Moreover, "Outaouais" being the name of the provincial Administrative Region no. 7, it has never been translated; consequently, "Ottawa Urban Community"(OUC) is incorrect. The only instance in which the French "Outaouais" has "Ottawa" as equivalent in English, is in the name of the "rivière des Outaouais-Ottawa River", "Outaouais-Ottawa" being the name of the Algonquian people(and the name of their Ojibwa language) established in the area at the time of the first settlements.

The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002...

The Red River style of log building construction was one of the original methods used in Canada. The logs were left rounded with notched ends. This type of construction consisted of a basic frame of grooved, vertical, squared posts, mortised and tenoned into sills at their bases or set directly into the ground (in rare, early cases), and at their tips, mortised and tenoned into squared plates. Horizontal, squared timbers were fixed between these posts, with the tenons of the horizontal timbers fitting into the vertical groove of the posts. Roof structures of varying types were built on the wall plates. Red River Frame construction allowed both flexibility and portability. Large buildings could be erected using short logs, and buildings could be easily dismantled, moved and put up elsewhere. For these reasons, Red River Frame was the predominant type of construction used in the Canadian West during the fur trade era. The Red River style of log construction has spread across North America and is currently enjoying new popularity. Red River log construction is yet another Metis contribution to the development of Canada.

Buildings constructed before 1870 are of great importance because they recall the Red River Settlement era. They will be either of stone or log construction (the specialized log construction undertaken in Manitoba at this time was called Red River frame construction).

The former Grey Nun's Convent is recognized historically as the headquarters of a French Canadian religious order who came to the Red River Settlement in 1844... The two-storey hipped roof structure was constructed of white oaken logs... On 20 Sept. 1783 Britain acknowledged American independence and recognized a boundary along the centre of the 4 northerly Great Lakes and from Lake of the Woods "due west" to the imagined location of the Mississippi's headwaters, then South along the Mississippi River. This gave the US Niagara, Detroit and Michilimackinac, the valuable lands reserved to Indians by the Royal Proclamation of 1763. The Americans, negotiating through the French comte de Vergennes, obtained fishing rights off Newfoundland and access to the East banks of the Mississippi; in turn they promised restitution and compensation to British Loyalists.
