Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 DEF
An English breed of light speedy horses kept chiefly for racing and originating from crosses between English mares of uncertain ancestry and Arabian stallions imported about the end of the 17th century. 4, record 1, English, - thoroughbred
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The term means that a horse is a direct descendant in the male line, through about 30 generations, from 3 Arabian stallions imported into England. They were the Byerley Turk (in 1689), the Darley Arabian (1704) and the Godolphin Barb (1730). These were the foundation sires, and the direct line survives through a single descendant of each: Herod (1748-81), the great-great-grandson of the Byerley Turk; Eclipse (1764-89), the great-great-grandson of Darley Arabian; and Matchem (1748-81), the grandson of the Godolphin Barb. 5, record 1, English, - thoroughbred
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 OBS
English thoroughbred: The precision is no longer necessary, the term «thoroughbred» being linked to the English breed of horses. 6, record 1, English, - thoroughbred
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 3 OBS
French thoroughbred : So said of the horses sired in France after 1883, but in direct line with the foundation sires in England. Even if France officially dropped "pur-sang anglais" for "pur sang" in 1976, the terms "English thoroughbred" and "French thoroughbred are still used to distinguish the descendants sired in England from those sired in France. 6, record 1, English, - thoroughbred

Record 1, Textual support, French
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 OBS

6, record 1, French, - pur%2Dsang
