Barometer whose sensitive element is composed of one or a series of aneroid capsules.

Pressure is measured using a barometer. An aneroid barometer has a capsule [usually metallic] which collapses slightly when pressure increases and expands when it decreases. These motions are transferred to a dial and calibrated in either millimetres of mercury or millibars or inches.

The aneroid barometer was invented by a Frenchman, Lucien Vidie, in 1843. He produced a metallic barometer which he called an aneroid, from the Greek, meaning "without liquid. "The principle of the aneroid barometer is the change in height of a sealed metallic chamber which has flexible upper and lower surfaces. As the pressure changes, so the height of the chamber varies which, in turn, moves an index pointer.

Aneroid barometer is temperature compensated at a given pressure level by adjustment of the residual gas in the aneroid or by a bimetallic link arrangement. The instrument is subject to uncertainties due to variations in the elastic properties of the spring and capsules, and due to wear in the mechanical linkages.

Hockey took its most important step forward in 1924 when the International Hockey Federation, the world governing body for the sport, was founded in Paris under the initiative of Frenchman, Paul Léautey. Mr. Léautey, who would become the first President of the FIH, was motivated to action following hockey's omission from the program of the 1924 Paris Games. Mr. Léautey called together representatives from seven national federations to form the sport's international governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Hockey sur Gazon... The women's game developed quickly in many countries and in 1927, the International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations(IFWHA) was formed.... After celebrating their respective Golden Jubilees-the FIH in 1974 and the IFWHA in 1980-the two organisations came together in 1982 to form the FIH.

Frenchman Vincent Fouchier has studied density in the Ile-de-France region in considerably detail.... Fouchier uses the concept of "human density, "which is simply the sum of residents plus places of work divided by the number of hectares.(A hectare is about 2. 5 acres.) Fouchier also makes use of the concept of gross and net densities. Gross density calculates density on the basis of total land area; net density deducts non-urbanized areas from the calculation and thus results in higher calculated densities.
