4, record 1, French, - spectrom%C3%A9trie%20Raman

Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy(SFG) is a technique used to analyze surfaces and interfaces. This spectroscopy method utilizes sum frequency generation, where two light beams mix at a surface and generate an output beam with a frequency equal to the sum of the two input frequencies. From the experiment setup and the output beam, one can deduce the composition, orientation distributions, and some structural information of molecules on a surface. SFG has advantages in its ability to be monolayer surface sensitive, ability to be performed in situ(for example aqueous surfaces and in gases), and not causing much damage to the sample surface. 3, record 13, English, - sum%2Dfrequency%20generation

6, record 15, French, - longueur%20d%27onde%20de%20la%20lumi%C3%A8re

An important aspect of the wave nature of light is frequency. The frequency of a wave is its rate of oscillation and is measured in hertz, the SI unit of frequency, equal to one oscillation per second. 2, record 25, French, - fr%C3%A9quence

Lock-in is a fundamental physical phenomenon associated with all oscillating devices. Laser gyros exibit the same phenomenon, in that the coupling mechanism is the reflection of light from one laser beam back along the path where it interacts with the oppositley traveling beam. This is called backscatter and is caused primarily by imperfect mirrors. Therefore, at low rotation rates, there is no frequency difference between the counter-rotating beams so that the gyroscope does not indicate any rotation. In spite of the ring laser gyro's dead zone whith lock-in thresholds on the order of hundreds of degrees per hour, it is still feasible to obtain measurements of rotation rates of less than 1 deg/h. 1, record 28, English, - ring%20laser%20gyro%27s%20dead%20zone

3, record 29, French, - cheminement%20al%C3%A9atoire

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses. 1, record 34, English, - optoacoustic%20detector

... an effective bird-scaring light for fitting to large and small aircraft has been developed and is to be marketed as the Anti-Bird-Collision(ABC) light.... The strobe light is arranged to flash at increasing frequency as the aircraft accelerates during take-off, the rate increasing from 0. 5Hz to 2. 0Hz, where it remains until the aircraft has cleared the altitude band for likely bird strikes. On landing, the light is switched on when descending into the affected height band and the flashing rate is reduced from 2. 0Hz in flight to 0. 5Hz at taxiing speed. The ideal arrangement is for two lights to be used, one on each wing, but single lights can be fitted is small military and civil aircraft. 1, record 36, English, - anti%2Dbird%20collision%20light

The laser(or lidar) velocimeter [lidar=light radar] operates in a fashion entirely analogous to that of the airborne Doppler weather radars likely soon to be available for detecting turbulence in storm cells. As with radars, the device detects air movements by observing the motion of particles suspended in the air and carried with it. The only significant difference is that a beam of coherent infrared radiation is used to scan ahead of the aircraft, instead of a beam(or series of pulses) of radio energy in the considerably longer-wavelength microwave band. The frequency of the back-scattered echoes or reflections undergoes Doppler shift detection by standard heterodyning techniques, which involve comparing the frequency of the reflected illumination with that of the original laser beam. Any reflecting object or material which has motion relative to the transmitter/receiver will cause a detectable shift in frequency, which can be isolated from the transmitter's own proper motion(over the ground) and thus yield a precise indication of the speed at which the air is moving several hundred metres in front of the aircraft. From this data, it is easy to compute what the air speed of the aircraft will be when it reaches that particular patch of air in a few seconds’ time [and hence detect possible turbulence ahead]. 2, record 37, English, - laser%20velocimeter
