The notion of critical bands, introduced by Fletcher(1940), explains the masking of a narrow band(sinusoidal) signal by a wideband noise source... One can think of a critical band as a frequency selective "channel" of psychoacoustic processing; only noise falling within the critical bandwidth can contribute to the masking of a narrow band signal. The mammalian auditory system consists of a whole series of critical bands, each filtering out a specific portion of the audio spectrum. 4, record 18, English, - critical%20bandwidth

After many attempts to account for all extraneous sources of radio noise, they came to the conclusion that there was a general background of radiation at the radio frequency they were using. After discussions with a group led by Robert Dicke at nearby Princeton University it became clear that they had in fact detected remnant radiation from the origin of the universe. 3, record 22, English, - fossil%20radiation

New methods of acoustic imaging are presented that provide images with reduced reverberation noise and images of nonlinear scattering and propagation parameters of the object, and estimation methods of corrections for wave front aberrations produced by spatial variations in the acoustic propagation velocity. The methods find use in a variety of applications such as acoustic imaging of geological structures, SONAR imaging of sub-sea objects, and medical ultrasound imaging. The methods are based on processing of the received signal from transmitted dual frequency band acoustic pulse complexes with overlapping high and low frequency pulses. The high frequency pulse is used for the image reconstruction and the low frequency pulse is used to manipulate the nonlinear scattering and/or propagation properties of the high frequency pulse. 3, record 28, English, - acoustic%20imaging

Space Based Detectors. Ground based interferometers are limited at the low frequency end by the practical difficulties of operating on Earth : the increasing difficulty of vibration isolation at lower frequencies, the effects of the curvature of the Earth for longer baseline detectors, and the expense of longer vacuum systems. There is also the fundamental difficulty of gravity gradient noise... The obvious solution to these specific difficulties is to use an interferometric detector in space. Interferometer arms may be made orders of magnitude longer than is practical on Earth. 6, record 39, English, - interferometric%20detector

6, record 39, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20interf%C3%A9rom%C3%A9trique

The Gamma filter performs gamma map filtering. Gamma filtering is primarily used on radar data to remove high frequency noise(speckle) while preserving high frequency features(edges). The Gamma Map filter was first proposed by Kuan.... Lopes modified the Kuan Map filter by assuming a gamma distributed scene and setting up two thresholds. The gamma filter size ranges from 1 to 11. Different filter sizes will greatly affect the quality of processed images. If the filter is too small, the noise filtering algorithm is not effective. If the filter is too large, subtle details of the image will be lost in the filtering process. A 7x7 filter usually gives the best results.... The GAMMA filter performs spatial filtering on each individual pixel in an image using the grey level values in a square window surrounding each pixel. The dimensions of the filter must be odd, and can be from 3x3 to 11x11 pixels. 2, record 40, English, - gamma%20filter

Gamma Filter yields the best smoothing and despeckling. Moreover, it seems to keep the edges without blurring the minimum. Eight textures are applied, based on the cooccurrence matrix. These textures include mean, variance, homogeneity, contrast, dissimilarity, entropy, second moment, and correlation. 4, record 40, English, - gamma%20filter

Fairly soon after the introduction of talkies in the late 1920s, the movie industry settled on using an analogue optical soundtrack on the edge of the film to carry the sound. This was read by the projector and converted to an electrical audio signal. This was a very noisy medium, so in the absence of advanced noise reduction technology such as Dolby A(the cinema equivalent of, and precursor to, the Dolby B and C noise reduction systems on compact cassettes), the situation was eased by sharply cutting the treble response(at around 5kHz). The bass was also cut, which accounts for the characteristic pinched sound of old movies. The recommended system of frequency response tailoring was called ’Academy Sound. ’ 1, record 45, English, - Academy%20sound

Ultra wideband broadcasts digital pulses that are timed very precisely on a carrier signal across a very wide spectrum(number of frequency channels) at the same time. Transmitter and receiver must be coordinated to send and receive pulses with an accuracy of trillionths of a second. The unit of measurement of environmental noise is the decibel(dB). To better approximate the range of sensitivity of the human ear to sounds of different frequencies, the A-weighted decibel scale was devised. Because the human ear is less sensitive to low-frequency sounds, the A-scale de-emphasizes these frequencies by incorporating frequency weighting of the sound signal. When the A-scale is used, the decibel levels are shown as dBA. On this scale, the range of human hearing extends from about 3 dBA to about 140 dBA. A 10-dBA increase is perceived by most people as a doubling of the sound level. The smallest change that can be heard is about 2 to 3 dBA. 2, record 53, English, - A%2Dweighted%20decibel

Deterministic : A type of signal whose spectrum consists of a collection of discrete components, as opposed to a random signal, whose spectrum is spread out or "smeared" in frequency. Some deterministic signals are periodic, and their spectra consist of harmonic series. Vibration signatures of machines are in general deterministic, containing one or more harmonic series, but they always have non-deterministic components, such as background noise. 2, record 64, English, - deterministic%20signal%20processing

2, record 73, English, - weighted%20decibel

For best recording results, bias, level and equalization electronics of a deck should be adjusted to match the characteristics of a particular brand of tape. This is because mismatched adjustments result in peaked or rolled-off frequency response, increased noise and distortion. Therefore, nearly every recording you make is compromised to a degree by the mismatch between hardware(deck) and software(tape). The best, but impractical, solution would be to have a technician calibrate your deck to match it to the specification of your favorite tape. Pioneer gives you a practical alternative Auto BLE and Super Auto BLE. It's a computerized way to optimize bias, level and equalization for whatever tape you care to use, and in seconds. Auto BLE uses two test tones to match the deck(electronics) with the tape one with high frequency and one with low. 1, record 74, English, - Auto%20BLE

It's a computerized way to optimize bias, level and equalization for whatever tape you care to use, and in seconds... Super Auto BLE uses three test tones high, mid and low... 1, record 75, English, - Super%20Auto%20BLE

The Rohde & Schwarz active rod antenna HE010 allows a sensitivity which is near the theoretical maximum even for small atmospheric-noise figures. The antenna, only 1 m in length, operates in the frequency range 10 KHz to 80 MHz, is largely immune to noise signals, has two isolated outputs and is therefore able to feed two receiving paths in wideband operation without reducing the sensitivity. The study mechanical construction of glassfibre-reinforced polyester and the wide voltage range from 18 to 35 V make the rod antenna particularly suitable for mobile use. 1, record 83, English, - active%20rod%20antenna
