FREQUENCY POLYGON [7 records]

Record 1 2013-03-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Probability (Statistics)
DEF

A distribution in which the discrete case assigns the same probability to each value within its domain; in the continuous case it has a constant probability density over a given interval.

DEF

A frequency distribution which has approximately the same number of observations [or the same probability density] in all class intervals within a certain range(the frequency being zero outside this range), so that the frequency polygon is a rectangle.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Probabilités (Statistique)
DEF

OBS

loi rectangulaire; loi uniforme : termes uniformisés par l'ISO.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistical Methods
  • Mathematics
DEF

The relationship between the values of a characteristic and their frequencies or their relative frequencies.

OBS

The distribution may be graphically presented as a histogram, bar chart, cumulative frequency polygon, or as a two-way table.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Méthodes statistiques
  • Mathématiques
DEF

Record 3 2012-06-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistics
  • Statistical Graphs and Diagrams
DEF

The polygonal line obtained by joining the points the abscissa of which is the upper limit on each class and the ordinate of which is the cumulative absolute frequency.

OBS

In French the term "fréquence" usually refers to relative values while in English the term frequency refers to absolute values, unless otherwise specified or made clear by a context.

OBS

A frequency distribution can be accumulated beginning at either end to form a cumulative frequency polygon. Accumulation from the beginning of the frequency distribution produces a "less than" frequency polygon while accumulation from the end of the frequency distribution produces a "more than" frequency polygon. In the above definition, SPIST refers only to the "less than" concept and neglects the other which should be included.

DEF

Record 4 2008-11-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistical Graphs and Diagrams
CONT

The frequency polygon is drawn by plotting a point on the graph at the intersection of the midpoint of the interval and the height of the frequency. When the points are plotted, the dots are connected with lines, resulting in a frequency polygon.

OBS

In French, the term "fréquence" always refers to relative values. In English, the term frequency refers to absolute values unless otherwise specified or made clear by a context. The term frequency polygon, therefore, usually involves absolute values while the polygon involving relative values is called relative frequency polygon or percentage polygon.

OBS

A smoothed frequency polygon becomes a frequency curve.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Diagrammes et graphiques (Statistique)
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistics
  • Statistical Graphs and Diagrams
CONT

Graphical representations of relative frequency distributions can be obtained from the histogram or frequency polygon by simply changing the vertical scale from frequency to relative frequency, keeping exactly the same diagram. The resulting graphs are called relative frequency histograms or percentage histograms and relative frequency polygons or percentage polygons, respectively.

Record 6 1997-09-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistical Methods
OBS

This concept does not seem to have a set terminological unit to designate it in the target language. The concept does exist in the English language, however, as the following text indicates :"A frequency polygon is a line graph of class frequency plotted against class mark. It can be obtained by connecting midpoints of the tops of the rectangles in the histogram.... the sum of the areas of the rectangles in the histogram equals the total area bounded by the frequency polygon and the X axis...

French

Domaine(s)
  • Méthodes statistiques
CONT

Polygones de fréquences déduit de l'histogramme. [...]

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistics
CONT

A symmetrical distribution means that the middle class has the highest frequency and that the frequencies above the middle class of the distribution exactly correspond to the frequencies below the middle class. If the frequency distribution is shown by a bar chart(histogram) or a line chart(frequency polygon), a vertical line through the mid-point of the middle class may divide the graph into two perfect identical halves.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Statistique
CONT

Key term(s)
  • courbe symétrique
