We present the modification of two ESA [European Space Agency] ground stations carried out in order to support the in-flight RF [Radio Frequency] validation of the Proximity Communication Equipment(PCE), part of the International Space Station(ISS). This subsystem plays a critical role during the docking of the Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV), and has to be tested prior to each ATV launch, to ensure that the RF performance is as expected. For the check-out, an unmodulated signal is transmitted by the PCE during an ISS pass, and received by the two ground stations. Based on the strength of the received signal, the radiation characteristic of the complete PCE can be assessed, and compared with the nominal performance. The measurement process requires calibrating the receiving subsystem, including antenna, front-end and back-end equipment. The adopted calibration procedure, only relying on radio stars measurement, does not require the use of a calibrated source external to the ground station. 3, record 3, English, - proximity%20communication%20equipment

3, record 3, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20communication%20PCE

The Doppler effect on sound waves is experienced in everyday life. When an ambulance passes us, the siren appears to change its note. As it approaches, the pitch is high. As it passes us, the pitch falls. The effect occurs with any type of waves, including light. In the case of sound the effect was described by Christian Andreas Doppler (1803-1853), while for the light it was observed by Armand Fizeau (1819-1896). That’s why sometimes the effect is called the Doppler-Fizeau effect. 5, record 7, English, - Doppler%20effect

Effet Doppler.

The PHM is an atomic clock with outstanding stability for averaging times from 1 to 100, 000 seconds, to be used in precise positioning, time keeping and other on-boards applications. It is designed to perform in space environment for not less than 12 years. The operating principle exploits the stimulated energy emission occurring during the hyperfine transition of the atomic hydrogen in a miniaturised microwave cavity. The ultra stable RF [Radio Frequency] generated signal, at the frequency of 1420. 4057517..

Space Based Detectors. Ground based interferometers are limited at the low frequency end by the practical difficulties of operating on Earth : the increasing difficulty of vibration isolation at lower frequencies, the effects of the curvature of the Earth for longer baseline detectors, and the expense of longer vacuum systems. There is also the fundamental difficulty of gravity gradient noise... The obvious solution to these specific difficulties is to use an interferometric detector in space. Interferometer arms may be made orders of magnitude longer than is practical on Earth. 6, record 23, English, - interferometric%20detector
