[The core of the] ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) [project] is a laser-cooled caesium atomic clock(Pharao), which exploits the microgravity conditions onboard the Space Station... Pharao will improve clock frequency stability and accuracy by a factor of 100 compared with the best measurements currently achievable on Earth, opening up new opportunities in various fields of fundamental research and applications. This ultra-precise measurement of time will allow relativistic measurements and tests, applications in atmospheric physics and geodesy, navigation and advanced telecommunications.

The PHM is an atomic clock with outstanding stability for averaging times from 1 to 100, 000 seconds, to be used in precise positioning, time keeping and other on-boards applications. It is designed to perform in space environment for not less than 12 years. The operating principle exploits the stimulated energy emission occurring during the hyperfine transition of the atomic hydrogen in a miniaturised microwave cavity. The ultra stable RF [Radio Frequency] generated signal, at the frequency of 1420. 4057517.. MHz [megahertz], is used as a reference in a frequency synthesiser to generate the 10 MHz standard reference frequency.

The PHM is the most stable spaceborne atomic clock ever developed for an operational programme. The PHM is the master clock for the ESA/EU [European Space Agency/Europe] Galileo Navigation System.

Le second satellite expérimental du système européen de positionnement par satellite Galileo, destiné notamment à tester l'horloge atomique la plus précise jamais placée en orbite à ce jour, a été lancé avec succès le 27 avril 2008 dernier du centre spatial de Baïkonour. Ce satellite de test, baptisé GIOVE-B (Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element) [...] Galileo, premier système européen de navigation et de positionnement par satellite [...] sera compatible avec les deux autres systèmes de navigation par satellite couvrant l'ensemble du globe : le système américain GPS et le système russe Glonass.

Le maser ("Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation") à hydrogène est une horloge atomique extrêmement stable basée sur l'atome d'hydrogène. Il a été inventé par Kleppner et Ramsey en 1960 à l'université de Harvard. Le principe de fonctionnement est semblable à celui du LASER sauf que la radiation émise est une radiation micro-onde et non pas optique. Le maser à hydrogène est utilisé principalement en radioastronomie et en géodésie comme horloge pour la synchronisation de radiotélescopes utilisant la technique du VLBI (Very Long Base Interferometry). Il est utilisé également pour la poursuite des sondes planétaires (Deep Space Tracking). Dans le futur, il pourrait être utilisé dans les systèmes de navigation par satellite de type GPS à cause de sa très grande stabilité (cf l'avenir du temps atomique ).
