CONT

Wong and Brodo note that while it is possible that some of the very small lichens may have been overlooked, this is not the case for foliose and fruticose species, which are large and which appear to have completely disappeared in the past 60 years. This is a serious loss of biodiversity...

Record 4 1997-12-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Silviculture
CONT

Needleleaf forests and woodlands are dominated by white spruce(Picea glauca) or white spruce mixed with black spruce(P. mariana). The understory typically consists of low woody vegetation, such as white mountain-avens(Dryas octopetala), red-fruit bearberry(Arctostaphylos rubra), arctic willow(Salix arctica), crowberry(Empetrum nigrum), and mountain-cranberry(Vaccinium vitis-idaea). Mosses(for example, Pleurozium schreberi and Rhytidium rugosum) grow in moist depressions. Fruticose lichens(for example, Cetraria spp.) are scattered throughout the understory vegetation mat.

CONT

Wong and Brodo note that while it is possible that some of the very small lichens may have been overlooked, this is not the case for foliose and fruticose species, which are large and which appear to have completely disappeared in the past 60 years. This is a serious loss of biodiversity, and does not measure the reduction in abundance and reduced ranges of most lichen species and what must be major losses of genetic diversity at the population level.

French

CONT
