FUEL CLASSIFICATION [6 records]

Record 1 - external organization data 2011-10-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
DEF

... wastes that are only slightly contaminated and can normally be transported without special precautions such as shielded containers. (This definition of low level waste is commonly used in Canada for classifying beta-gamma emitters...)

CONT

Low-level radioactive waste (LLW) is composed of a variety of substances that are generated by a large number of processes. Due to this heterogenous mixture, there is no universally accepted classification scheme. The following is used in this report: - Low-Level Waste (LLW) - requires no shielding and does not generate significant heat. - Intermediate-Level Waste (ILW); High-Level Waste (HLW).

CONT

The Task Force's assessment of this problem led it to develop its own definition and classification system, based primarily on the specific activity and half-life of the materials involved. First, it defined low-level radioactive waste as being : all those radioactive wastes, other than spent fuel, arising from the mining, milling, refining or use of materials containing radionuclides. Second, it divided low-level wastes into four categories or classes... based on the concentration of radioactivity... of the waste material...

OBS

Such wastes produce a dose rate of less than 100 millirem/hour at a distance of 30 cm from the waste.

Key term(s)
  • low activity waste

Domaine(s)
  • Déchets nucléaires
  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
DEF

[...] déchets [...] de 0 à 200 mCi/m³ [...]

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Motor Vehicles and Bicycles
  • Trucking (Road Transport)
CONT

Finally, some SUVs and pickups are so large(greater than 8, 500 lbs. GVWR [gross vehicle weight rating]) that they do not qualify as "light trucks" under the current standards. These include the largest full-sized pickups and passenger vans, and larger models of the Ford Excursion and Chevrolet Suburban SUVs. However, EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] recently added the classification "medium-duty passenger vehicle" to include heavy passenger vehicles-passenger vans and SUVs up to 10, 000 GVWR starting in MY2004. Heavy pickups and cargo vans will not be affected, since their main function is transporting cargo, as opposed to passengers. This change is only for emissions standards, and will not affect fuel economy standards.

  • Burners and Steamfitting
CONT

Domestic oil burners. a) Gun and rotary burners are in this category as used in residential and small commercial and industrial structures.

CONT

Oil burners... can be divided into two major groups, residential and commercial-industrial.... Residential oil burners are ordinarily used in the range of 0. 525 to 3. 68 ml/s fuel consumption rate. However, burners up to 7, 35 ml/s sometimes fall in the residential classification because of basic similarities in controls and standards... No. 2 fuel oil is generally used, although burners in the residential size range can also operate on No. 1 fuel oil.... The majority of residential burner production(over 95%) is of the high pressure atomizing gun burner type.
