Subject field(s)
  • Ignition Systems (Motor Vehicles)
DEF

A computer-based ignition system which is usually a part of the electronic engine control unit (ECU).

OBS

ECU consists of a central control unit(CPU) or a microprocessor, random access memory(RAM), read only memory(ROM), and input/output interfaces. Based on information from input sensors(engine air flow, coolant temperature, crank position, throttle position, etc.), ECU determines optimum settings for the output actuators of fuel injection, ignition timing, idle speed, etc.

OBS

computer-controlled ignition system; digital ignition system: terms and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Allumage (Véhicules automobiles)
DEF

CONT

It was determined that the FCU(fuel control unit) functioned normally in all respects with the exception that the motor bellows in the FCU had failed and exhibited a high cycle vibratory fatigue crack. In-flight monitoring did not reveal any significant fuel flow discrepancies because the design of the sensing bellows assembly provides redundancy, by means of an evacuated bellows, which allows the FCU to continue normal operation. This malfunction had no relevance to the occurrence.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Closing Devices and Nozzles (Mechanical Components)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
CONT

Examination of the aircraft engine at the accident site found that a steel blanking cap from the engine's fuel supply system was missing. That cap covered a test port on a threaded ’T-fitting’ that led to the engine fuel control unit. The test port allowed for the checking of un-metered fuel pressure from the engine driven fuel pump. The cap was normally fastened to the T-fitting and a torque applied to it to ensure that it remained securely fastened.

PHR

Pressure refuel blanking cap.

Subject field(s)
  • Electric Generating Systems
  • Diesel Motors
CONT

A diesel genset is in essence a standalone electricity generator powered by a diesel engine. Diesel gensets range in size and power output from 1 kVA to over 7500 kVA and are manufactured by assembling the components(of which the most important are a diesel engine, alternator, switching gear and assorted control systems) on a platform. The assembled unit is often enclosed in a casing which can be sound-proofed(by the manufacturer adding sound attenuation materials to the casing). Where no bulk fuel supply is available, diesel oil tanks will also be added allowing the diesel genset to be operated in locations where there is no regular supply of diesel oil.

OBS

The term "diesel generator" is elliptical and more familiar than "diesel generator set."

Key term(s)
  • diesel gen set
  • diesel engine gen-set
  • diesel engine gen set

French

Domaine(s)
  • Groupes électrogènes
  • Moteurs diesel
OBS

OBS

On écrirait mieux «diésel».

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Fueling Systems (Motor Vehicles)
CONT

Fuel in the D4D is pressurised to an extremely high 135mpa within the "common rail" that feeds all four cylinders (older diesel engines have a separate pipe leading from the pump to each cylinder). The high pressure injection creates better fuel atomisation for complete burning and increased power output. And because there is less fuel wasted through inefficient combustion, the D4D delivers better fuel economy too.

OBS

A common rail engine is designed to supply constant fuel pressure to electronically controlled injectors through a shared fuel reservoir. This means that the fuel supply is not dependent on the engine revs. A common rail system is built around four basic components : a high pressure pump with pressure regulator and inlet metering valve, a rail which contains a pressurised reserve of fuel, injectors which inject precise amounts of fuel into the combustion chamber as required and a Diesel Control Unit-the ’brain’ of the system, which precisely controls injector flow and timing as well as rail pressure while continuously monitoring the operating conditions of the engine.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Alimentation (Véhicules automobiles)
DEF

Environment Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) : The orbiter's Environmental Control and Life-Support System purifies the cabin air, adds fresh oxygen, keeps the pressure at sea level, heats and cools the air, and provides drinking and wash water. The system also includes lavatory facilities. The cabin is pressurized to sea level(14. 7 psi) with 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent nitrogen, comparable to Earth's atmosphere. The air is circulated through lithium hydroxide/charcoal canisters which remove carbon dioxide. The canisters are changed on a regular basis. Excess heat from the cabin and flight-deck electronics is collected by a circulating coolant water system and transferred to radiator panels on the payload bay doors where it is dissipated. The fuel cells produce about seven pounds of water each hour. It is stored in tanks, and excess water is dumped overboard. The lavatory unit collects and processes body waste, and also collects wash water from the personal hygiene station. The lavatory unit, located in the middeck area, operates much like those on commercial airlines but is designed for a weightless space environment.
