Active grille shutters, which improve efficiency by opening and closing automatically to control airflow, are popping up on a number of new [car] models... When they’re open, the shutters allow air to flow through the radiator and into the engine compartment, as usual, to promote cooling. But when that cooling air is not needed, the shutters close, rerouting air around the vehicle to lessen aerodynamic drag and reduce fuel consumption. As an added bonus, closed shutters also reduce warm-up time in cold weather. 7, record 7, English, - active%20radiator%20grille%20shutters

Fluidized bed combustion systems use a heated bed of sand-like material suspended(fluidized) within a rising column of air to burn many types and classes of fuel. This technique results in a vast improvement in combustion efficiency of high moisture content fuels, and is adaptable to a variety of "waste type" fuels. The scrubbing action of the bed material on the fuel particle enhances the combustion process by stripping away the carbon dioxide and char layers that normally form around the fuel particle. This allows oxygen to reach the combustible material much more readily and increases the rate and efficiency of the combustion process. 3, record 15, English, - fluidized%20bed%20system

The advanced-passive reactor, the AP1000, is already a proven technology in the world.... Some 1, 300 man years of design and safety work has already been carried out on that type of design. In terms of fuel efficiency, the newer forms of nuclear reactor are some 10 times more economic than current counterparts-for each gigawatt of power produced, they require 30 tonnes of fuel per year, compared with 300 tonnes of the same fuel required by Magnox power stations. Those new designs are very safe and have a passive safety system, which is not reliant on electric pumps or other automated facilities as is the present case. 3, record 16, English, - advanced%20passive%20reactor

How can we make the engine more efficient without giving up a single horsepower of performance when we need it? These days, the answer is engine downspeeding. This is not a reduction in the size of the engine; instead, it's a reduction in the rpm [revolutions per minute] of the engine, especially at highway cruising speeds between 61 and 68 miles per hour. Downspeeding allows the engine to cruise in its sweet spot, reducing friction and increasing fuel efficiency. 1, record 18, English, - engine%20downspeeding

Self-polishing copolymer(SPC) antifoulings release biocides via a hydrolysis reaction of an acrylic polymer with seawater. This is a chemical reaction and only occurs at the surface of the coating. "Controlled solubility copolymers" or "self-polishing copolymers (SPC)" are modern coatings in which, initially for TBT [tributyltin] paints, the biocide was chemically part of the paint matrix or resin, for example the copolymer tributylin methacrylate. When immersed, hydrolysis caused the copolymer to cleave, or hydrolyse, splitting the copolymer into a TBT (the biocide) and an acrylate (the resin) component. The TBT then released and acted as a biocide, the acrylate dissolved to ablate the paint. TBT-free SPCs have now been developed which use copper, zinc or silyl acrylate copolymers. 5, record 20, English, - self%2Dpolishing%20copolymer%20antifouling%20paint

Moderation is a very important balance in a reactor. If a reactor has the perfect amount of moderation, it has the highest power efficiency. Too much moderator in respect to fuel creates a situation called overmoderation. The opposite condition is undermoderation. Overmoderation can be dangerous, because this means when a moderator becomes less efficient, which tends to happen when it gets warmer, the reactor actually increases in power. 2, record 25, English, - undermoderation

The boilers are fed wood fuel from the main fuel bin located adjacent to the boiler house. The boilers are the "pile burner" type, which burn wood in a large pile on the floor of a refractory lined furnace box. Combustion efficiency with this type of boiler is generally low but pile burners are simple and therefore relatively inexpensive. Low combustion efficiency also means that emissions such as particulates and carbon monoxide are relatively high. One notable advantage to these systems is that high moisture content fuels can be burned as well as "dirty" fuels containing debris. 3, record 34, English, - pile%20burner
Record number: 34, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Pile burner: Boilers incorporating a pile burning design find applications where the anticipated wood fuel has a high (up to 65%) relative moisture content, as is found in whole green tree chips, bark, and green mill residue. Grates serve to support the fuel, and underfire air flowing up through the grates provides oxygen for combustion, cools the grates, promotes turbulence in the fuel bed, and dries the fuel. The most common form of pile burning is the Dutch oven, which was used almost exclusively during the early part of the century (Guinn and Turner 1990). 4, record 34, English, - pile%20burner

The xenon ion propulsion system, or XIPS(pronounced "zips"), is the culmination of nearly four decades of research into the use of electric propulsion as an alternative to conventional chemical propulsion.... the increased efficiency possible with XIPS allows for a reduction in propellant mass of up to 90% for a satellite designed for 12 to 15 years operation. Less propellant results in reduced cost for launch, an increase in payload, or an increase in satellite lifetime, or any combination of the above.... The on-board XIPS system is used primarily for spacecraft stationkeeping. Small thrusts are required to correct for the tug of solar or lunar gravity and to reposition the satellite in its proper orbit and altitude. A satellite's lifetime as well as its launch weight is thus determined by the amount of fuel aboard for its thruster system. While most current satellites use a chemical bipropellant propulsion system, a XIPS-equipped satellite instead uses the impulse generated by a thruster ejecting electrically charged particles at high velocities. XIPS requires only one propellant, xenon, and does its stationkeeping job using a fraction of that required by a chemical propellant system. 3, record 44, English, - xenon%20ion%20propulsion%20system

1, record 44, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20%C3%A0%20propulsion%20ionique%20au%20x%C3%A9non

A blend of fee and rebate, this is an idea that seeks to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution. For example, when you bought a new car, you would pay an extra fee if it were energy-efficient user of fuel, or alternatively get a rebate if it were energy-efficient. The neutral point would be set so that fees and rebates balanced, so it became neither an inflationary measure nor a disguised tax. 2, record 47, English, - feebate

The term is mainly to be found in the USA; it has been around since the early 1990s at least (it appeared in Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign literature), and under this name. Initiatives that penalise heavy users (gaz-guzzler taxes, for example) strictly aren’t freebate schemes, as there’s no rebate element; others, like the British licence-tax reductions for small cars, should equally fall outside its scope, as there’s no explicit balancing penalty. But most environmentalists seem to use the term loosely to mean any tax or charge that is scaled to encourage economy; the word is still mostly to be found in the jargon of such groups. 2, record 47, English, - feebate

Another innovation is the back-surface reflector(BSR). Even in photovoltaic devices operating at theoretical maximum efficiency, less than 40% of the light to which it is sensitive is absorbed by the cell and converted to electricity. The rest travels through unabsorbed and becomes a system loss. However, the BSR reflects this light back through the cell for a second pass, which greatly increases the conversion efficiency. Also, the BSR reflects radiation to which the cell is not sensitive. This radiation is called out-of-band radiation, and cannot be converted to electricity with this given material bandgap. By reflecting the out-of-band radiation back through the cell, it passes back out the front to the heat source where it is recycled.(Essentially, it helps keep the heat source hot so less fuel is required.) 2, record 49, English, - back%20surface%20reflector

The accumulator is intended for heating fuel components in the rocket and space engines and can be used in space engineering, aircraft and other branches of industry. The task of increasing gas heating efficiency, reducing mass of the construction, diminution of dimensions and lowering thermal and hydraulic losses of heated gas is solved by making a heat accumulating element as a mono-unit in the form of cylinder. The covers with branch pipes are recessed in the ends of the mono-unit. The covers are butt joined to mono-unit on conical surfaces through pressurizing end seals at forming the collectors for gas feed and discharge. Plate electric heater and channels or annular slot for flowing gas are located along the longitudinal axis. The axis of channels or annular slot location divides the mass of heat accumulating element into two equal parts. In so doing, porous insert or a set of badly stream-lined bodies is in the channels or annular slot. All units of heat accumulator are coated with gas-dense material. 2, record 51, English, - annular%20slot

The fastest growing of all transport modes, commercial air travel has also made the greatest strides in improving energy efficiency. From the early 1960s to the mid 1990s, the fuel consumption per passenger seat-kilometre of newly certified aircraft in Canada decreased by approximately 50 per cent. This decrease was due to improved aerodynamic efficiencies, larger capacity aircraft, as well as engine technology improvements. Energy use per passenger-kilometre was also reduced due to increased load factors(passenger-kilometres per available seat-kilometres), and improvements in operating procedures. In the last half of the 1980s, improvements slowed, due to slower stock turnover, lower jet fuel prices, and worsening air traffic congestion. Transportation activity is typically measured as passenger-kilometres for passenger transportation, and tonne-kilometres for freight transportation. 1, record 60, English, - fuel%20consumption%20per%20passenger%20seat%2Dkilometre

1, record 60, French, - consommation%20de%20carburant%20par%20si%C3%A8ge%2Dkilom%C3%A8tre

The well known ACEE(Aircraft Energy Efficiency) program in the United States emerged from the fear of substantial increases in future fuel costs. The slogan was "reduced weight for reduced fuel cost". to achieve high performance, some designs called for individually tailor-made plies which saved a mere ounce at a substantial cost penalty. Instead of the cost of fuel increasing as predicted, it has actually dropped considerably(in real dollars) since the early 1980s, and the demand for high performance has somewhat diminished. Consequently, the ACEE program has lost much of its funding and clout. 3, record 65, English, - Aircraft%20Energy%20Efficiency

By Fuel Used. Boilers may be designed to burn coal, wood, various grades of fuel oil, various types of fuel gas, or to operate as electric boilers. A boiler designed for one specific fuel type may not be convertible to another type of fuel. Some boiler designs can be adapted to burn coal, oil or gas. Several designs allow firing with oil or gas by burner conversion or by using a dual fuel burner.... Efficiency of fuel burning boilers is defined in two ways : combustion efficiency and overall efficiency. Electric boilers are, of course, nearly 100% efficient in transferring heat within the boiler. 1, record 74, English, - fuel%20burning%20boiler

«Combat persistence» as used here means the number of steady-state turns that can be accomplished at the flight condition of altitude and Mach number. These data assume the aircraft to be full of fuel at the initiation of combat. Again, one sees that the larger number of turns is achieved at speeds near the cruise speed; the airframe is efficient near cruise speed. The engines were specifically designed and chosen to match this point of airframe efficiency. Further the speed at which sufficient combat persistence is obtained for a "sensible" fight(allowing at least three turns) lie below Mach 1. 1, record 75, English, - combat%20persistence

There are a number of performance factors that determine how well your heating system is able to supply heat to your home. For all non-electric heating systems there are two basic approaches to defining efficient performance. Both measure the percentage of heat available in a fuel that is actually delivered as heat to the house. Steady state efficiency is a performance factor that is easily measured over a short period of time. It indicates the performance of a system that has been running long enough to allow all furnace components to reach their normal operating temperatures...
