Radioactivity that results from human activity is categorized as anthropogenic radiation. Anthropogenic radiation is generally a much smaller contributor to radiation exposure than natural sources.

Sources of anthropogenic radiation include nuclear weapon testing that was conducted between 1945 and 1980, the regular operation of nuclear reactors(including supporting activities such as mining, milling and fuel fabrication), and nuclear power plant accidents(such as the accidents in Chernobyl, Ukraine, in 1986 and in Fukushima Daiichi, Japan, in 2011).

SKI supervises all nuclear activities in Sweden, namely nuclear fuel fabrication, nuclear power plant operation and the operation of other technical facilities, transport and waste management. On certain issues, SKI, co-operates with the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority(SSI) whose task is to ensure compliance with the radiation protection regulations. SKI works on behalf of the Government, the parliament and, ultimately, the Swedish people. SKI is a regulatory and supervisory authority that reports to the Ministry of Environment.
