Wildland fuels are grouped into fuel types based on the primary fuel that carries the fire. These include grass, grass-shrub, shrub, timber-understory, timber litter, and slash-blowdown. Fuel types create different fire behavior.

Lorsqu'ils sont soumis aux mêmes conditions de terrain et de météo, les feux qui consument de l'herbe fanée ou se propagent dans des peuplements de conifères (ex. : épinette noire, pin gris) progresseront plus rapidement que ceux qui surviennent dans un peuplement d'arbres feuillus (ex. : peuplier faux-tremble).

In punky wood or duff, a slow-spreading, smoldering, but persistent fire will result; in grass, dead needles, and other fine litter a flaming, fast-spreading, but transient fire will burn.... The development of fuel-type maps must take into account all these potentials of the fuel combinations on the ground.
