CONT

Fuel in the D4D is pressurised to an extremely high 135mpa within the "common rail" that feeds all four cylinders(older diesel engines have a separate pipe leading from the pump to each cylinder). The high pressure injection creates better fuel atomisation for complete burning and increased power output. And because there is less fuel wasted through inefficient combustion, the D4D delivers better fuel economy too.

OBS

A common rail engine is designed to supply constant fuel pressure to electronically controlled injectors through a shared fuel reservoir. This means that the fuel supply is not dependent on the engine revs. A common rail system is built around four basic components: a high pressure pump with pressure regulator and inlet metering valve, a rail which contains a pressurised reserve of fuel, injectors which inject precise amounts of fuel into the combustion chamber as required and a Diesel Control Unit - the ’brain’ of the system, which precisely controls injector flow and timing as well as rail pressure while continuously monitoring the operating conditions of the engine.

Domaine(s)
  • Alimentation (Véhicules automobiles)
DEF

DEF

nozzle holder with eccentric spring chamber: [Nozzle holder] design in which the spindel, the spring(s) and its/their housing(s) are located eccentrically to the centrelines of the nozzle holder and of the nozzle. [Term and definition standardized by ISO.]

OBS

Fuel injection.... Nozzle. A) The diesel nozzle atomizes and delivers diesel fuel into the combustion chamber area. B) The nozzle is positioned within the nozzle holder assembly; injecting fuel as the pintle is lifted against the force of the pressure spring. The nozzle body and pintle are manufactured as a precisely matched pair to ensure accurate fuel delivery.

OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Diesel Motors
  • Fueling Systems (Motor Vehicles)
DEF

An injector which is camshaft-driven and incorporates a plunger. The plunger works in conjunction with orifices in the injection body to determine the beginning and end of injection. The plunger has a helix and is rotated by a rack so the beginning and end of injection can occur closer together or farther apart, thus shortening or lengthening the injection period and changing metering. A special pump which supplies fuel through an orifice to the injector operates at a pressure which is precisely controlled depending on the changes in engine speed.

Fuel has to be taken from the tanks and its pressure raised for injection into the combustion system, it has to be metered and its flow rate closely controlled to give changes in thrust as quickly as is compatible with maintaining surge-free operation or avoiding a flame-out.

CONT
