For a fishing vessel with a requirement to tow large loads at low speeds and to have a reasonable free-running speed, a controllable pitch propeller would seem the obvious choice. The propeller efficiency can be maintained at a high level in the two major modes of operation[, ] which realizes a considerable saving in fuel over the life of the vessel.

A major contribution to the sequence of events leading to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster was the failure to anticipate the effect of "xenon poisoning" on the rate of the nuclear fission reaction in the Chernobyl nuclear reactor.... With the extremely low power level, xenon builds up in the fuel rods, "poisoning" the reaction by absorbing neutrons.

Medium-level waste refers to all wastes not included in low level and high level categories.

Low level wastes are those that are only slightly contaminated and can normally be transported without special precautions such as shielded containers.... The term high level waste is reserved for spent fuel elements from nuclear reactors and ion exchange columns, and wastes resulting directly from chemical reprocessing of fuel elements.

In the seventies, the CEA, in collaboration with its subsidiaries Sfec and Technicatome, developed a fuel with a low level of enrichment, Caramel. The CEA used complete cores of Caramel in the Isis and Osiris reactors. It recently abandoned use of Caramel in Osiris to the benefit of silicide fuel. Caramel fuel was and, it seems, may still be, used in submarines. Caramel fuel is composed of flat pastilles of uranium oxide enriched to about 7. 5%. Each pastille has almost the shape and size of a true caramel, hence the name.
