The moisture content of the top layer of coniferous needles and twigs covering the forest floor is one of the factors of forest fire danger which must be determined accurately if fire danger in such timber types is to be measured.... For daily use at numerous field stations, where duff is a forest fire fuel of material significance, some instrumental method giving an immediate indication of duff moisture is necessary. To meet this need [a member] of the U. S. [United States] Forest Products Laboratory, in 1923, invented an instrument called a duff hygrometer. 2, record 3, English, - duff%20hygrometer

The preliminary mechanical processing of the dried [hemp] stalks involves some fairly vigorous handling of the raw material, including breaking, scutching and the separation of the line fibres from the tow and other by-products. The stronger, more solid fibre bundles keep their original lengths and parallelism. During breaking and scutching the weaker and shorter fibres(tow), especially those at the foot of the stalks, break away and are removed together with the hurds, dust, soil, etc.... The hurds are removed pneumatically and may be sold for use as natural fertiliser, for the heat insulation of buildings, as fuel or as animal litter... Fluidized bed combustion systems use a heated bed of sand-like material suspended(fluidized) within a rising column of air to burn many types and classes of fuel. This technique results in a vast improvement in combustion efficiency of high moisture content fuels, and is adaptable to a variety of "waste type" fuels. The scrubbing action of the bed material on the fuel particle enhances the combustion process by stripping away the carbon dioxide and char layers that normally form around the fuel particle. This allows oxygen to reach the combustible material much more readily and increases the rate and efficiency of the combustion process. 3, record 12, English, - fluidized%20bed%20system

Non-recurring congestion results from the occurrence of unexpected events(incidents) such as accidents, stalled vehicles, or material spills. The U. S. Federal Highway Administration estimates that approximately 60% of travel time lost to congestion is due to incidents... The early detection of incident events minimises the delay experienced by drivers, wasted fuel, emissions, and lost productivity, while also reducing the likelihood of secondary accidents. The goal of automatic incident detection(AID) is to minimise the human requirements in the efficient and effective detection of incident events. 4, record 26, English, - automatic%20incident%20detection

After the depleted fuel assemblies are removed from the reactor, they are placed in a canister … The canister alone, however, is not sufficient to provide adequate gamma or neutron radiation shielding. Therefore, apparatus that provide additional radiation shielding are required during transport, preparation and subsequent dry storage … The additional shielding is achieved by placing the canisters within large cylindrical containers called casks. Casks are typically designed to shield the environment from the dangerous radiation in two ways. First, shielding of gamma radiation requires large amounts of mass. Gamma rays are best absorbed by materials with a high atomic number and a high density, such as concrete, lead, and steel. The greater the density and thickness of the blocking material, the better the absorption/shielding of the gamma radiation. 1, record 27, English, - blocking%20material

1, record 41, French, - autoprotection%20en%20%C3%A9nergie

Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself(also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. The damage effects in microdispersed fuels will approach those in a solid solution, while the radiation effects in macrodispersed fuels will mainly occur in the inclusions themselves and in a thin matrix layer around the inclusion, predominantly due to neutron damage. 1, record 47, English, - microdispersed%20fuel

4, record 53, Spanish, - vaina

1, record 54, English, - macrodispersed%20fuel

Dry Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel. Spent nuclear fuel is a highly radioactive material that is a byproduct of the fission of uranium in commercial nuclear power plants. Currently, spent nuclear fuel is stored in pools of water at most nuclear power plants. By designing equipment for spent nuclear fuel dry storage, the need for maintaining high cost pools can be eliminated. Designing efficient fuel dry storage equipment using Fluent's suite of CFD software enables reduction of costs while maintaining safety. Decommissioning the spent fuel storage pools can, over time, save millions of dollars in overhead costs. 1, record 64, English, - fuel%20dry%20storage

Fast reactors can be operated in a "burner" mode... Such reactors can "store" temporarily large quantities of plutonium as fuel in their cores, and, in the event that nuclear fission has to be replaced one day by better sources of concentrated energy, they can dispose of, or "burn, "inventories of plutonium and actinides. This also eliminates plutonium "mines", a potential source of material for nuclear weapons proliferation. 1, record 65, English, - reactor%20in%20burner%20mode

The UNGG(Uranium Natural Graphite Gaz) is an obsolete design of nuclear power reactor developed by France. It was graphite moderated, cooled by carbon dioxide, and fueled with natural uranium metal. It was developed independently of and in parallel to the British Magnox design, and to meet similar requirements. The main difference between the two designs is the fuel cladding material, which was magnesium-zirconium alloy in the UNGG, as opposed to magnesium-aluminium in the Magnox reactor. 1, record 73, English, - UNGG%20reactor

E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. has developed a novel approach to gain some of the advantages of a coextruded blow-molded bottle without the cost and complexity of multiple extruders and expensive scrap reclaim systems. Only minor modification of the basic equipment is required. A barrier resin is tailored for physical blending with a base resin in much the same way that colorant is blended with a resin. However, instead of producing a homogenized mix, the barrier resin is permitted to laminate in the base resin. Several random multiple layers of barrier resin of various lengths and sizes are created. Although no single layer completely covers the entire shape and surface of the bottle, barrier is created by the "tortuous path" the permeating gas must follow. A modified nylon material is the first to be used for this approach. Applications include fuel tanks and bottles for agricultural chemicals, thinners, and solvents. 1, record 81, English, - blended%20resin

A certain class of ceramic and metallic materials can be manufactured by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method. Even though by now this process has included reaction systems of the solid-gas and solid-liquid types, the original work was directed towards the reactions investigated where not only the reactants but also the final products formed in the solid phase. These reactions are therefore generally referred to as gasless, solid-solid or condensed phase combustion reactions. 3, record 93, English, - condensed%2Dphase%20combustion

Condensed phase combustion is a complex phenomenon of theoretical and practical interest, in particular, as a method to synthesize materials. This combustion synthesis process involves a self-sustained combustion wave which propagates through initial reactants converting them into a desired product. In condensed phase combustion the initial reactants as well as final, and possibly intermediate products, remain in the condensed phase throughout the reaction. Though the combustion process occurs in a heterogeneous medium composed of reactive particles, typical models of condensed phase combustion treat the medium as homogeneous. 4, record 93, English, - condensed%2Dphase%20combustion

Another innovation is the back-surface reflector(BSR). Even in photovoltaic devices operating at theoretical maximum efficiency, less than 40% of the light to which it is sensitive is absorbed by the cell and converted to electricity. The rest travels through unabsorbed and becomes a system loss. However, the BSR reflects this light back through the cell for a second pass, which greatly increases the conversion efficiency. Also, the BSR reflects radiation to which the cell is not sensitive. This radiation is called out-of-band radiation, and cannot be converted to electricity with this given material bandgap. By reflecting the out-of-band radiation back through the cell, it passes back out the front to the heat source where it is recycled.(Essentially, it helps keep the heat source hot so less fuel is required.) 2, record 96, English, - back%20surface%20reflector

1, record 98, French, - collecteur%20de%20courant

The accumulator is intended for heating fuel components in the rocket and space engines and can be used in space engineering, aircraft and other branches of industry. The task of increasing gas heating efficiency, reducing mass of the construction, diminution of dimensions and lowering thermal and hydraulic losses of heated gas is solved by making a heat accumulating element as a mono-unit in the form of cylinder. The covers with branch pipes are recessed in the ends of the mono-unit. The covers are butt joined to mono-unit on conical surfaces through pressurizing end seals at forming the collectors for gas feed and discharge. Plate electric heater and channels or annular slot for flowing gas are located along the longitudinal axis. The axis of channels or annular slot location divides the mass of heat accumulating element into two equal parts. In so doing, porous insert or a set of badly stream-lined bodies is in the channels or annular slot. All units of heat accumulator are coated with gas-dense material. 2, record 99, English, - annular%20slot
