FUEL PROBE [10 records]

Record 1 2012-11-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
  • Operations (Air Forces)
CONT

Some Black Hawk models don’t need to land to refuel. They have an in-flight refueling probe. The probe allows the Black Hawks to refuel from a KC-130 tanker aircraft.

OBS

CF-18s often carry heavy munitions, which reduces the amount of fuel storage space. Inflight refuelling from tanker aircraft allows the Hornet to stay in the air longer before returning to base. The Hornet's extendable probe plugs into a hose at the rear of the tanker. Refuelling takes only a few minutes, but requires close-formation flying and a high degree of concentration from the pilot.

Key term(s)

OBS

Refueling rate. One important parameter in aerial refueling is the fuel transfer rate. In practice, the fuel transfer rate for the boom receptacle method can reach 800 lb/min, while the probe and drogue method can have a fuel transfer rate from 2800 lb/min to 5000 lb/min.

CONT

To obtain a more exact representation of the neutron flux distribution within the core, additional neutron flux measurements are conducted within the core... Each incore probe is fixed to the end of a flexible cable referred to as a teleflex cable for moving it inside a measuring channel of the instrumentation of the nuclear reactor. Each measuring channel opens at one end into an instrumentation area in the bottom part of the reactor building. The fission probes are moved inside the measuring channels from the instrumentation area. Each measuring channel includes a fuel assembly instrumentation tube inside the core of the nuclear reactor and a glove finger inside the instrumentation tube in which the fission probe moves. The neutron flux is measured in a set of fuel assemblies distributed throughout the section of the core.

Cassini was launched from Cape Canaveral on 15 October 1997, on a Titan IV/Centaur launch vehicle. Cassini was the second-largest interplanetary probe ever launched, and the high-energy trajectory to Saturn required a series of gravitational boosts to propel the spacecraft without consuming too much fuel.
