Suction defuelling can be accomplished with a fuel truck defuelling pump through the pressure fuelling receptacle. Suction defuelling can also be accomplished by inserting a suction hose through the overwing fill ports, but this method is only recommended as a last resort. Aircraft system pumps and suction defuelling performed simultaneously through the pressure fuelling receptacle will provide the highest flow rates possible and should be used when time is critical.

Subject field(s)

CONT

Aircraft refuelling and defuelling is controlled by a separate subsystem within the overall fuel system. The aircraft is fuelled by means of a refuelling receptacle that connects to the refuelling tanker. From the receptacle it enters a refuelling gallery which distributes the incoming fuel to the various aircraft tanks. The control of fuel entry into each tank is undertaken by valves that are under the control of the fuel management system.

CONT

The airport ground refueling system supplies fuel to the aircraft at high enough flows and pressures to allow refueling of the aircraft in a short period of time. Aircraft refueling is performed prior to almost every flight whereas defueling is primarily performed during maintenance actions.

Refueling rate. One important parameter in aerial refueling is the fuel transfer rate. In practice, the fuel transfer rate for the boom receptacle method can reach 800 lb/min, while the probe and drogue method can have a fuel transfer rate from 2800 lb/min to 5000 lb/min.

The pressure-fueling station on the aircraft has a pressure-fueling and defueling receptacle and an electrical control panel. The pressure-fueling receptacle is standard on all aircraft that use the pressure-fueling method. However, the electrical panel and controls differ from one aircraft to another, depending upon the complexity of the fuel system.

DEF

Blending of ethanol into gasoline or biodiesel into petroleum diesel at terminals, without active mixing.

CONT

Currently, fuel additives are typically added to the fuel at large fuel terminals to bulk storage tanks, tank trucks, rail cars or other storage receptacles. The fuel is added by a process known as "splash blending" which means the additives are added as the fuel is being loaded into the receptacle. The process relies on the splashing of the liquids to effect mixing.... Splash blending can also be used to mix the additive with the fuel at on-site tanks. In this case the additive is added to, for example, a bulk fuel tank or bunker tank located at the site of end-use. The splashing of the liquids mixes the additives as the tank is being filled from a fuel distribution vehicle or pipeline. Fuel distribution vehicles can include trucks, rail cars, barges or the like.

CONT

Ethanol cannot be moved effectively through today’s pipeline system, as it tends to get pulled into the water that usually exists in petroleum pipelines and tanks. Instead, it is blended at terminals near the end users. Splash blending, in which ethanol is added directly to a tanker truck along with the base gasoline, is commonly used.

OBS

"splash blending" generally refers to a blending process done by pouring products together, for example, manually pouring an additive into a shipping compartment. This may occur at the loading rack when a vehicle (barge or truck) is being loaded, or enroute. Typically, analysis is only done for the splash blending of lubricants.

OBS

[This operation] is a physical, rather than chemical process and occurs at the terminal rather than at the refinery.

CONT
