FUEL STOP [10 records]

Record 1 2024-05-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Brush, Prairie and Forest Fires
  • Fires and Explosions
DEF

A fire that advances rapidly in a given direction with a well-defined head.

CONT

Given that there are thousands of kilometers of the convoluted urban interface areas, much of which is private property, it is not feasible to install and maintain a system of 100-500 [meter] fuel reduced buffers to a standard that they will stop a running fire.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Incendies de végétation
  • Feux et explosions
DEF

Record 2 2019-11-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Brush, Prairie and Forest Fires
  • Fire Prevention
DEF

A fire set along the inner edge of a control line to consume the fuel in the path of a forest fire and/or change the direction of force of the fire’s convection column.

CONT

Then each man grabs his jump helmet - fitted with a cage-like mask to protect his face during a descent through branches - and his personal gear bag, which holds a liter of water, leather gloves, hard hat, flares for lighting back-fires ...

OBS

A fire set to burn off fuel in the path of an advancing wildland fire in order to stop its progress. Typically, a backfire is set inside a fire control line to reduce the fuel between the line and the fire edge.

Key term(s)
  • control burn
  • counter-fire

French

Domaine(s)
  • Incendies de végétation
  • Prévention des incendies
DEF

Record 3 2017-11-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
  • Airport Runways and Areas
CONT

The Accelerate-Stop Distance Required is the distance required to reach the Power Failure Point from a standing start and, assuming the critical power-unit to fuel suddenly at this point, to stop if a landplane or to storing the aeroplane to a speed of approximately 5 knots if a seaplane.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
  • Pistes et aires d'aéroport
CONT

Record 4 2014-05-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fires and Explosions
  • Combustion and Fuels (Fireplaces)
  • Heat (Physics)
DEF

Combustion of a material in the solid phase without flame but with emission of light from the combustion zone.

CONT

Flaming combustion burns wood fuel gases. It is the burning of the gases that produces the flame. The radiant heat of flaming combustion also preheats and pre-ignites unburned wood. Glowing combustion occurs only in cooler sections of the fire. It is the same chemical reaction as flaming combustion but burns wood fuel solids. Some of the wood glows red with glowing combustion. Sometimes flaming combustion proceeds until only ash, water and carbon dioxide remain; at other times wood cools off enough to stop burning before all the charcoal is consumed.

CONT

There was more residue left for both samples at the end of flaming combustion than at the end of the test, but glowing combustion (surface oxidative combustion) consumed some of the residues during the two minutes non-flaming exposure.

OBS

glowing combustion: term and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Feux et explosions
  • Combustion et combustibles (Foyers)
  • Chaleur (Physique)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
CONT

Unlike reactor cores, nuclear fuel cycle installations do not have their own resources provided at the design stage to regulate or stop any uncontrolled chain reaction. Critical excursion is a phenomenon that occurs quickly and of which there are few physical warning signs.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Réacteurs nucléaires de fission
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Systems
CONT

Overspeed conditions can occur in an engine for a number of reasons, such as for example, a sudden unforeseeable reduction in the engine load, a failure in the metering valve of the engine's fuel delivery system, or an erroneous signal from an associated electronic engine control(EEC) which modulates the metering valve to an excessively high flow setting. It is known to provide an overspeed protection system that monitors a speed of the engine, such as the rotational speed of the power turbine of a gas turbine engine, and upon detection of an overspeed condition will reduce or stop the flow of fuel to the engine from the fuel delivery system.

PHR

Motor overspeed protection system.

CONT

The fuel-oil heater serves a twofold purpose, it is designed to cool the oil and preheat the fuel for combustion.

CONT

Bell 212 helicopter... Engine power loss. Engine tear-down inspections revealed that the number two engine was not operating on impact and the fuel oil heater had malfunctioned, however this malfunction alone would not cause the engine to stop operating. If fuel pressure upstream from the engine driven boost pump is lost when the fuel oil heater has malfunctioned(allowing the fuel to be heated), the engine will stop operating. Since the investigation revealed no other reason for the engine to stop operating, it is likely that the number two engine shut down due to a loss of line fuel pressure provided by the electrical boost pumps, coincident with the malfunctioning fuel oil heater.
