Pulverized coal Systems : These are of two general types : 1) the direct-fired, or unit, system and 2) the storage, or bin, system. In the direct-fired system, raw coal is fed directly to a pulverizer where it is pulverized, mixed with air, and blown to the burner. In the storage system, coal is delivered to a raw-fuel bin and then passed to a pulverizer where it is reduced to a powder and dried for storage in a pulverized fuel bin before delivery to the furnace.

Research is under way to develop an automatic or self-fueling wood furnace. This system would burn either wood chips, sawdust or densified wood pellets of uniform size. Similar to automatic coal-burning systems, these automatic wood furnaces would draw wood fuel from a storage bin through a motorized fuel auger. A control system would adjust the amount of fuel according to the heating demands of the home. It would require little operating maintenance beyond periodic ash removal and filling of the fuel storage bin.
