FUEL SWITCHING [8 records]

Record 1 2011-09-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
  • Air Transport
CONT

When fuel is automatically transferred from the tail trim tank or center tank, it goes into the lower of the wing tanks and tends to mask a fuel imbalance. Switching the fuel transfer to manual makes the crew more aware of what the system is doing.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electric Generating Systems
  • Diesel Motors
CONT

A diesel genset is in essence a standalone electricity generator powered by a diesel engine. Diesel gensets range in size and power output from 1 kVA to over 7500 kVA and are manufactured by assembling the components(of which the most important are a diesel engine, alternator, switching gear and assorted control systems) on a platform. The assembled unit is often enclosed in a casing which can be sound-proofed(by the manufacturer adding sound attenuation materials to the casing). Where no bulk fuel supply is available, diesel oil tanks will also be added allowing the diesel genset to be operated in locations where there is no regular supply of diesel oil.

OBS

The term "diesel generator" is elliptical and more familiar than "diesel generator set."

Key term(s)
  • diesel gen set
  • diesel engine gen-set
  • diesel engine gen set

French

Domaine(s)
  • Groupes électrogènes
  • Moteurs diesel
OBS

Les termes «génératrice diesel» et «génératrice à moteur diesel» sont des formes elliptiques et familières du terme «groupe électrogène diesel».

OBS

On écrirait mieux «diésel».

Subject field(s)
  • Machinery
  • Diesel Motors
  • Traction (Rail)
CONT

An emergency power system consisting of a fuel engine driven generator set with automatic start up and transfer switching into the 600 volt system is provided for safe plant shutdowns in the event of power failures.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Machines
  • Moteurs diesel
  • Traction (Chemins de fer)
OBS

OBS

On écrirait mieux «diésel».

Subject field(s)
  • Spacecraft
  • Launching and Space Maneuvering
CONT

The Attitude Measurement Electronics uses inputs from the spacecraft Sun Sensors, Attitude and Orbit Control Electronics(AOCE) and ground commands to provide the spacecraft subsystems with refined Sun pulse information, and to control the position of the fuel regulation valves and heaters in the Reaction Control Subsystem. It also takes power from the AOCS power converters and provides power switching for other units within the AOCS.

CONT

open damper purge. During prepurge, the damper opens to high fire position and the burner motor drives air through the combustion chamber to remove any potentially explosive fuel or fumes. The damper closes to low fire position for ignition trials, and opens again to high fire position for the run period. Flame safeguard controls providing this feature have only 1 terminal for firing rate switching; they do not provide modulation during the run period.

  • Gas and Oil Heating
CONT

Many Canadian homes, especially older ones, are heated by oil furnaces. The preference for, petroleum-based fuel oil for home heating reached its peak in the early 1970s. From then until the early 1980s we have witnessed a change, with people switching to natural gas, electricity and wood.

Domaine(s)
  • Chauffage au gaz et au mazout
OBS
