It is generally considered that the structure of an enzyme should be complementary to the structure of the transition state rather than to the substrates of products. By this means, the increase in binding energy as the reaction proceeds lowers the activation energy of the chemical step-the 'strain’ theory of catalysis.... On binding, the substrate is strained or distorted. In Haldane's words :"Using Fischer's lock and key smile, the key does not fit the lock perfectly but exercises a certain strain on it"... Nowadays, the modified concept of transition state stabilization is gaining favor. According to this idea, it is not that the substrate is distorted but rather that the transition state makes better contacts with the enzyme than the substrate does, so that the full binding energy is not realized until the transition state is reached. 2, record 2, English, - binding%20energy
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Binding energy can, in theory, also be used to alter the energy levels of enzyme-bound reagents and so alter the equilibrium constants between enzyme-bound substrates, intermediates and products.... Protein engineering ... is eminently suited to studying and quantifying the role of binding energy in catalysis since side chains of the enzyme that interact with the substrate may be systematically modified to make small perturbations in the binding energy. 3, record 2, English, - binding%20energy

2, record 2, French, - %C3%A9nergie%20de%20liaison

The ends of the rods are threaded and the whole assembly(cylinder barrel, ends, seats, etc.) is held together with lock washers and nuts. In some designs, instead of passing through holes in flanges in the ends of the cylinder, the tie rods are actually a long bolt. The threaded end of the bolts pass through a non-threaded hole in one cylinder end and screw into a tapped hole in the other. 2, record 3, English, - tie%20rod%20cylinder

The "Sun-Mar" three chamber system... The composting chamber. "Sun-Mar" engineers found that the ideal conditions for fast, odorless composting could only be provided in a rotating drum,(we call it the Bio-drum). The Bio-drum is uniquely able to keep the compost completely oxygenated, mixed, moist and warm, and so provide perfect conditions for fast, aerobic(and therefore odorless) composting. Waste enters the composting drum through an entry port located in the top of the Bio-drum. By turning the handle on the front of the unit, the drum rotates, and the compost tumbles,(assisted by a mixing baffle) thereby thoroughly and completely oxygenating and mixing every part of the compost. The Bio-drum is fitted with a door which closes automatically to keep the waste inside as the drum rotates. After turning, a lock automatically maintains the Bio-drum in a top dead centre position ready to receive new material. To ensure that the compost cannot get saturated, a screen at the rear of the drum filters any excess liquid directly into the evaporating chamber. At the same time, by protecting the compost from direct heat, the Bio-drum keeps the compost uniformly moist. Lastly, the Bio-drum has the volume to hold the necessary mass of material to retain the natural heat developed in the core of the compost. Insulation on the outside of the drum prevents heat loss. The warm, moist, oxygen rich conditions in the Bio-drum allow the microbes to quickly break down the waste into its essential minerals. When the drum gets 2/3 full, some compost is extracted into the finishing drawer. This is done simply by pulling the drum lock, and rotating the drum backwards. Now, the drum door remains open, and compost falls into the second chamber;-the compost finishing drawer. 1, record 6, English, - composting%20chamber

Le système à trois compartiments «Sun-Mar». [...] 1, record 6, French, - compartiment%20%C3%A0%20compostage
