Used in video to denote a complete scan of an image. In motion video repeated scanning of a changing scene produces a series of frames. Synonymous with a full computer screen in desktop applications.

Dans tous les systèmes d'analyse vidéo, le mouvement est décomposé en une série d'images fixes. Chaque image fixe est découpée en un certain nombre de lignes, elles-mêmes analysées successivement point par point de la gauche vers la droite. Ce principe d'analyse est appelé balayage vidéo. Celui-ci est identique de la prise de vues à la reproduction sur écran. Il constitue le premier niveau de standardisation d'un système vidéo. Le nombre d'images fixes analysées par seconde doit être supérieur à 16 images/seconde pour reconstituer une impression de mouvement. On a choisi des valeurs en relation avec la fréquence du courant électrique alternatif, soit : - 25 images/seconde en Europe, en Afrique, au Moyen-Orient, dans une partie de l'Asie, - 30 images/seconde pour les Amériques et le reste de l'Asie.

Une image contient 625 lignes (aux USA, 525) divisées en deux trames de 312,5 lignes chacune.
