Record 3 2010-08-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wheels and Tires (Motor Vehicles and Bicycles)
CONT

Solid tires. Introduced in 1881 on the wheels of hansom cabs in London and formerly used for many types of road vehicles, solid tires disappeared from highways, mostly because of legislation that discouraged their use because they were hard on roads. Large sizes were supplanted by large pneumatic tires(truck and bus casings), but small solid tires came to be used extensively on industrial trucks and tractors. Some of these are made with metal base bands to which the rubber(and in some cases, rubbery polyurethane compositions) is firmly attached. These bands are the full width of the base of the tire and are often dovetailed to secure firm anchorage of a hard-rubber constituting the main portion of the tire.

Key term(s)
  • solid-rubber tyre
  • hard rubber tyre

French

Domaine(s)
  • Roues et pneus (Véhicules automobiles et bicyclettes)
CONT

Bandages pleins.

OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Maintenance
  • Concrete Construction
DEF

Crack or break approximately at right angles to the pavement centerline.

CONT

Transverse cracks will occur at intervals of about 4.5 to 7.5 m. in an unjointed highway pavement, with a longitudinal crack spacing that would vary somewhat depending on concrete properties and climatic conditions.

OBS

transverse cracks are further subdivided into full(across both lanes of two-lane road), half(across only one lane), and partial(across less than three-quarters lane width).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Entretien des routes
  • Bétonnage
DEF
