An additional circuit is provided in the motor field to weaken the current flowing through the field. The weakening is achieved by placing a resistance in parallel with the field. An alternative to multitasking. Here multiple tasks are loaded into computer memory, where you can switch between them with a keystroke. Only one task, the foreground task, is running at any time-all the background tasks remain in suspended animation until you switch to them. The advantage is that you can switch between them instantly, and while they are the foreground task, they run at full speed. However, each task must have a full memory image, so you must have lots of memory on your system. The new MS-DOS 5. 0 has a task-switcher in its shell.

Brown et al.(1982) reflect on the use of quantitative simulation for making inferences and see it as a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the simulation provides a lot of leverage to the inference process, because large amounts of knowledge are encoded in the model and brought to bear via the simulation. On the other hand, this embedded knowledge is often based on implicit assumptions and empirical decisions on the part of the model' s designers, which may be very subtle. For instance, the formulas used to run the simulation may only be valid for certain classes of inputs. If these assumptions are not made "explicit and checkable", they can easily be violated when the simulation involves faults. For teaching purposes, the main drawback of quantitative simulation is its inability to give a full account of the causality underlying its inferences. Causality is pedagogically important because it is the main ingredient of the kinds of explanations human students can understand. In a troubleshooting context, causality, more than information content, drives the diagnostic reasoning and the decision to perform measurements.

Each layer of plywood is called a veneer; these are produced in several ways including rotary cutting, half-round cutting with the stay log, slicing, and sawing. Rotary cutting is by far the most important... Logs which are to be made into rotary-cut veneer... are removed from storage and cut into bolts... The bolts are softened... and the bark is removed. Each bolt is centered in a large lathe, and the cutting mechanism-a pressure bar and knife that run the full length of the bolt-is put in place. As the bolt is turned, the knife peels off a thin layer of veneer while the pressure bar compresses the wood ahead of the knife to reduce splitting and cutting checks.

Peeling provides the greatest volume and the most rapid production, because logs are merely rotated against a flat knife and the veneer is peeled off in a long continuous sheet.
