In Olympic weightlifting, the jerk is the movement that completes the clean and jerk sequence in competition. The lifter cleans the weight from the floor while dropping into a position that very closely resembles the bottom portion of a front squat.

Report of a short term Task Force set up to develop a strategy for the effective reintegration and management of long term offenders (those serving ten years or more including lifers and those offenders with an indefinite sentence) - the report was approved by at the May, 1998 meeting of CSC’s [Correctional Service Canada] Executive Committee.

CONT

The predominant theme arising from the Report is the implementation of the Life Line concept. The concept has three essential components. They include InReach Services, which involves a successful lifer or long term offender who contacts, motivates and actively encourages lifers in their preparation for reintegration back to the community. The second is Community Programs and Services, which involves dedicated program resources for Lifers to ensure a process of gradual phased day parole leading to full parole. The final component is Public Education which involves community-based correctional agencies and their InReach workers who contribute to "public" understanding on the nature of the Lifer and long term offender population to increase support and understanding for the released offender. This may include speaking at schools, community organizations and youth at risk.

Earth explorer missions such as Cryosat, the Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer(GOCE), the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity(SMOS) and the initiation of full implementation of the Atmospheric Dynamics Mission(ADM-Aeolus) are major achievements of the first phase of this programme. ... blue moon... For half a century, it's been known as the second full moon in a month... But that's wrong... The magazine [Sky & Telescope] incorrectly defined the term 53 years ago. James Hugh Pruett wrote a 1946 piece for the magazine after apparently misinterpreting a complex 1937 article in the Maine Farmer's Almanac that essentially, but not clearly, said a blue moon occurs when a season has four full moons, rather than the usual three. Pruett mistakenly thought it meant having a second full moon within the same month. Pruett's mistake went unnoticed for decades.... Although Sky & Telescope's editors think Pruett's mistake led to the popular modern mis-definition of "blue moon, "it's unclear where the Maine Farmer's Almanac came up with the rule. The almanac is defunct. Pruett died in 1955.... By either definition--Pruett's or the almanac' s--blue moons occur about every two or three years... Although purists may subscribe to the almanac' s point of view, Sinnott thinks Pruett's error will prevail.

Overwing exits are found on passenger aircraft to provide a means of passenger evacuation onto the wing, where they either continue off the trailing edge by sliding down the extended flaps or by using an evacuation slide that deploys when the exit is opened. Overwing exits are smaller in width and height than standard emergency exits on an aircraft, and therefore have a reduced evacuation capacity, and are typically added to aircraft where there is insufficient evacuation capacity at the main doors to obtain a 90 second evacuation, but where the addition of another set of full sized exits is not necessary to accomplish this. Overwing exits are primarily self-help exits meaning that in an emergency evacuation the passengers seated immediately adjacent to the exit will be responsible for assessing for external hazards and opening the exit.

Recently two new types of lightning have been verified : red sprites and blue jets. These atmospheric discharges occur very high in the Earth's atmosphere-much higher than the familiar form of lightning. Blue jets appear blue in color and go from the tops of clouds to a height of about 50 kilometers. Because blue jets typically last almost a full second, one can easily see the jet rise from the clouds with a fast video camera. Blue jets appear as narrow cones and travel about 100 kilometers per second. The existence of blue jets has been suggested previously, but only in 1994 were aircraft flown above massive thunderstorms with the high speed video equipment necessary to verify these spectacular events.

James Six's combined maximum and minimum thermometer... consists of a U-tube, the bend of which is filled with mercury. One leg contains spirit above the mercury and terminates in a bulb also full of spirit. The other leg also contains a column of spirit above the mercury, but terminates in a bulb containing air and vapour of spirit mixed. With increase of temperature the spirit in the full bulb expands; the mercury in consequence is pushed round the bend and rises to a greater or less extent in the other leg, carrying before it a steel index which thus marks the maximum temperature. With cold the spirit in the full bulb contracts, and the mercury moves back carrying with it a second index which marks the minimum temperature. The instrument is set by drawing down the two indices upon the two ends of the mercury column by means of a magnet.

Le thermomètre à maximum et minimum est un thermomètre à alcool dont la tige est deux fois recourbée et dont la partie inférieure contient du mercure. Deux index en fer sont refoulés par ce mercure quand il monte, mais restent en place quand il redescend. Lorsque la température s'élève, l'alcool des réservoirs A et B se dilate, et l'alcool de B pousse le mercure qui fait monter l'index 1. Quand la température s'abaisse, l'alcool de B se contracte et le mercure redescend du côté A, mais l'index 1 reste en place à cause de son frottement dans le canal et indique ainsi la température maximale. Si la température s'abaisse encore, l'alcool de B se contracte et le mercure descend du côté A et monte du côté B, jusqu'à rejoindre l'index 2 et l'entraîner jusqu'à une position qui repérera la température minimale. La température instantanée est donnée par le niveau du mercure de l'un ou de l'autre côté. Lorsqu'on le désire, on peut ramener les deux index au contact du mercure à l'aide d'un aimant.

The "Sun-Mar" three chamber system... The composting chamber. "Sun-Mar" engineers found that the ideal conditions for fast, odorless composting could only be provided in a rotating drum,(we call it the Bio-drum). The Bio-drum is uniquely able to keep the compost completely oxygenated, mixed, moist and warm, and so provide perfect conditions for fast, aerobic(and therefore odorless) composting. Waste enters the composting drum through an entry port located in the top of the Bio-drum. By turning the handle on the front of the unit, the drum rotates, and the compost tumbles,(assisted by a mixing baffle) thereby thoroughly and completely oxygenating and mixing every part of the compost. The Bio-drum is fitted with a door which closes automatically to keep the waste inside as the drum rotates. After turning, a lock automatically maintains the Bio-drum in a top dead centre position ready to receive new material. To ensure that the compost cannot get saturated, a screen at the rear of the drum filters any excess liquid directly into the evaporating chamber. At the same time, by protecting the compost from direct heat, the Bio-drum keeps the compost uniformly moist. Lastly, the Bio-drum has the volume to hold the necessary mass of material to retain the natural heat developed in the core of the compost. Insulation on the outside of the drum prevents heat loss. The warm, moist, oxygen rich conditions in the Bio-drum allow the microbes to quickly break down the waste into its essential minerals. When the drum gets 2/3 full, some compost is extracted into the finishing drawer. This is done simply by pulling the drum lock, and rotating the drum backwards. Now, the drum door remains open, and compost falls into the second chamber;-the compost finishing drawer.

En protégeant le compost contre la chaleur directe, le Bio-drum maintient également un degré uniforme d'humidité. En dernier lieu, le Bio-drum peut contenir la masse nécessaire à conserver la chaleur naturelle développée au centre du compost. L'isolation à l'extérieur du tambour évite la perte de chaleur vers l'extérieur. Quand celui-ci est rempli aux 2/3, on transfère une partie du compost dans le tiroir de finition. À cette fin, il suffit de tirer le verrou du tambour et de tourner celui-ci dans le sens inverse des aiguilles d'une montre. Maintenant, la porte du tambour reste ouverte et le compost tombe dans le tiroir de finition.
