CONT

The ornithopter is made of light-weight materials, like Kevlar and carbon fibers, and weighs only 9 pounds, despite a wingspan of 10 feet. The craft, which is almost 5 feet long is powered by a model helicopter engine and has radio controls for the throttle, rudder and elevator. A fully developed ornithopter might combine the best characteristics of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. It could hover like a helicopter but fly forward more like an airplane.

CONT

Fuel starvation and fuel exhaustion(sometimes referred to as fuel depletion) are problems that can affect internal combustion engines fuelled by either diesel, kerosene, petroleum or any other combustible liquid or gas. If no fuel is available for an engine to burn, it cannot function. All modes of transport powered by such engines can be affected by this problem, but the consequences are most significant when it occurs to aircraft in flight.... Fuel starvation is slightly different to fuel exhaustion, in that fuel is in the tank but there is a supply problem which either fully or partially prevents the fuel from reaching the engine. Causes may include a blocked fuel filter, problems with fuel tank selection if multiple tanks are installed, or more commonly water-contaminated fuel.

When it is completed, the K-1 will be the first commercially available, fully reusable launch vehicle to provide low-cost access to space for low earth-orbiting satellites. The K-1 is powered by modified Russian rocket engines, provided by Aerojet, that burn LOX(liquid oxygen) and kerosene. Thrust is produced when the appropriate mixture of LOX and kerosene is pumped into the combustion chamber and ignited.

CONT

The K-1 will be able to deliver approximately 3,200 kg (7,000 lbm) of pressurized cargo to the ISS and return approximately 900 kg (2,000 lbm) of recoverable downmass. The K-1 cargo module can accommodate a volume of 30 m³ (1,000 ft³) equivalent to five International Standard Payload Racks. The K-1 is also capable of providing up to 40km (25 nmi) reboost and attitude control for ISS, an important feature for maintaining the ISS orbit, and conducting on-orbit technology demonstration as precursor risk reduction missions.

PHR

K-1 is equipped with an active dispenser.

The Rotary Rocket Company is developing the Roton which is a fully reusable, single-stage-to-orbit, commercial launch vehicle. It will be piloted by a crew of two and is being designed to carry 7, 000 lbs to low-earth-orbit. The Roton will takeoff vertically like a conventional rocket powered by a new rotary engine burning liquid oxygen and jet fuel. Once its payload is delivered to orbit, the Roton returns to Earth via a nose-mounted rotor which is deployed in space and used during reentry to help stabilize the craft. Once in the atmosphere, the vehicle will glide like an autorotating helicopter and land vertically, assisted by rotor tip thrusters.

Agencies working for NASA use this term for a lighter-than-air aircraft designed to explore the planets. An aerobot is a helium-filled balloon fitted with heaters that are powered by solar cells. During the day, solar energy will heat the helium and give it extra buoyancy; at night, the balloon will drop to lower altitudes or even touch the ground. A limitation of the design is that its movements cannot be fully controlled, though it may have some ability to dictate its altitude, perhaps through dropping ballast, releasing gas or managing its temperature. A big advantage of this design is that it doesn’t need fuel, which is expensive to transport and which runs out all too soon. Unlike satellites, aerobots fly in the atmosphere, so allowing experiments to be carried out on its chemistry. They can also view and record the ground from much lower altitudes than is possible with satellites. NASA plans to send a device of this sort to Mars in 2003, and possibly later to Titan, Venus and Jupiter.

The real innovation has occurred in the Liebherr actuator, which safely converts the quadruplex electronic command signal into a single mechanical output to the powered control unit valve. The exact layout is subject to patents, but the system drives a common output shaft by means of three fully independent, parallel actuators and uses electronic modelling to achieve double fail operational safety. The system has shown no hysteresis, minimal thresholds and almost zero transients.

CONT
