Mortality is a key component to understanding population dynamics of fish species. Total mortality is often estimated from the sequential decline observed in cohorts of fish.... catch curve [methods are] used to analyze this decline... All catch curves have three regions of interest : an ascending left limb, a domed middle portion, and a descending right limb... The ascending left limb represents age-classes of fish that are not yet fully vulnerable to the gear used in fishery. Fish in these age-classes are said to have "not fully recruited to the fishery. "The catches of fish in these age-classes are not useful for estimating the total mortality rate. 4, record 2, English, - ascending%20left%20limb

The exploitable biomass index was calculated from the survey catch of legal-sized(>94 mm [carapace width]) males, regardless of shell condition or claw size. The exploitable biomass index generated from spring survey data includes a component of soft-or new-shelled males that would not actually be retained by the fishery in the immediate year, but would be fully recruited to the fishery in the following year. 1, record 3, English, - exploitable%20biomass%20index

1, record 3, French, - indice%20de%20la%20biomasse%20exploitable
