smoke: A phenomenon made up of observable fumes containing gases, solids and liquids. There are several kinds of smoke, the color of which depends on the combustion process causing the smoke. Thus, a coal fire will emit black smoke. A turbine ship whose nozzle might need slight adjustment emits brown smoke. A steel mill emits red smoke. A nitric or sulfuric acid plant might emit yellow smoke. And so it goes. But white smoke is usually not smoke at all, it’s steam.

The copper-nickel alloy... was oxidized by a 1 : 1 nitric acid solution in a fume hood. Then 10 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid was added to the copper-nickel solution. The solution was boiled until all of the brown fumes ceased.

The removal of contaminated air and its replacement with clean air from the general workplace area.

As used on an MSDS [material safety data sheet], general ventilation, also known as dilution ventilation, is the removal of contaminated air from the general area and the bringing in of clean air. This dilutes the amount of contaminant in the work environment. General ventilation is usually suggested for non-hazardous materials.

OBS

As opposed to local ventilation, which is specific air changing in the immediate air of a contamination source. An example of local ventilation is a laboratory fume hood.

Oil filtration systems are one of the most effective means of controlling the contamination generated in a mechanical pump. The external oil filtration system, is an independent free-standing unit that usually consists of a transfer pump and motor combination, one or more stages of filtration, a sight glass to monitor the condition of the fluid, a pressure gauge to determine the element change point, and hoses equipped with dripless quick disconnects to attach the system to the mechanical pump. In addition, the system may have a means of quickly removing the filter housings, enabling the operator to effect an element change under a fume hood, or the system may be of a size that the entire system may be disconnected from the pump and transported to the fume hood.
