Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, commonly referred to as COPD, is a group of progressive lung diseases. ... These diseases include emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Many people with COPD have both. 4, record 1, English, - chronic%20obstructive%20pulmonary%20disease
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) is an ongoing lung condition caused by damage to the lungs. The damage results in swelling and irritation, also called inflammation, inside the airways that limit airflow into and out of the lungs. This limited airflow is known as obstruction. Symptoms include trouble breathing, a daily cough that brings up mucus and a tight, whistling sound in the lungs called wheezing. COPD is most often caused by long-term exposure to irritating smoke, fumes, dust or chemicals. The most common cause is cigarette smoke.... Although COPD is a condition that can get worse over time, COPD is treatable. 5, record 1, English, - chronic%20obstructive%20pulmonary%20disease

The burn test is a simple, somewhat subjective test based on the knowledge of how particular fibers burn. [One should be] prepared to note the following when testing... fibers : Do the fibers melt and/or burn? Do the fibers shrink from the flame? What type of odor do the fumes have?... The burn test is normally made on a small sample of yarns which are twisted together.... This test is very helpful in determining whether a fabric is made from synthetic or natural fibers, but it is not foolproof and the characteristics observed during the burning test can be affected by several things. 6, record 9, English, - burn%20test

Wood is still the largest biomass energy resource today, but other sources of biomass can also be used. These include food crops, grassy and woody plants, residues from agriculture or forestry, and the organic component of municipal and industrial wastes. Even the fumes from landfills(which are methane, a natural gas) can be used as a biomass energy source. 3, record 20, English, - bioenergy

Acetic acid is the most extensively used organic acid, and is obtained either by the oxidation of alcohol and aldehyde, or by the destructive distillation of wood and carbohydrates in general. This yields an impure pyroligneous vinegar, which is subsequently purified. ... Stahl proposed in 1700 a method to obtain acetic acid from vinegar by exposing the latter substance to a freezing temperature, separating the ice from the stronger acid; another method he suggested was to neutralize with an alkali and to evaporate, then distilling with an equal amount of sulphuric acid. In 1759 Count de Lauraguais obtained a crystallized acetic acid in a distillate of cuprum acetate, then known as "copper spirit." The name glacial acetic acid was affixed to this substance by Löwitz (1793), who repeatedly distilled diluted acetic acid with powdered charcoal, and obtained thereby a crystalline acid by subjecting the product to a low temperature. 5, record 24, English, - glacial%20acetic%20acid

The prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-," along with their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-" and "p-"), appear in italics and are ignored in alphabetizing. According to the actual chemical nomenclature rules in organic chemistry (in 2003), the numbers designating the positions of the disubstitution groups (1,2- for "ortho-," 1,3- for "meta-" and 1,4- for "para-") are to be preferred to the symbols "o-," "m-" and "p-." Furthermore, the prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-" should not be used anymore, and their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-," and "p-") will soon be judged to be avoided, if not totally condemned. 3, record 36, English, - 4%2Dmethoxybenzoyl%20chloride

smoke : A phenomenon made up of observable fumes containing gases, solids and liquids. There are several kinds of smoke, the color of which depends on the combustion process causing the smoke. Chimney pots have been documented as early as the 13th Century, although the United States, like much of Europe, largely discovered chimney pots in the mid 1800s. Because of their ability to increase draft up a chimney, they were invaluable in small and large houses alike, as well as in other buildings where fireplaces served as the primary source of heat. Since coal was the fuel of choice, it was of the utmost importance that noxious fumes and soot be vented up the chimney and out of the house. 4, record 59, English, - chimney%20pot

Receiving hoods are positioned to catch contaminants that are discharged from an operation in a predictable direction. Examples of receiving hoods include canopies located over a hot process in which hot exhaust fumes rise to the hood level by their own buoyancy, and hoods located adjacent to grinding wheels to catch the stream of dust generated by the spinning wheel. Receiving hoods may physically resemble capture hoods, but they differ with respect to the principle used for contaminant capture. Capture hoods operate at a higher flow rate to generate the air velocities necessary to capture contaminants from a source some distance from the hood opening. Receiving hoods, on the other hand, are positioned to catch the stream of contaminants delivered to them by forces intrinsic to the operation. 1, record 64, English, - capture%20hood

Air-purifying respirators clean contaminated air before it is inhaled by passing the air through a cleansing media such as a mechanical filter, cartridge or filter/cartridge combination. The air is passed through the cleansing media by breathing or by a blower. These latter are called powered air-purifying respirators. Mechanical filter respirators are used for protection against airborne particulate matter such as dusts, mists, fumes, smoke, etc. Cartridge respirators are used for protection against gases and vapours. These respirators rely on the use of activated charcoal or chemical-treated sorbents to remove the gases and/or vapours. Where both particulate and gaseous contaminants co-exist, a combination of a chemical cartridge and mechanical filter is required. 3, record 93, English, - combination%20respirator

Hood designs can be placed into three broad categories based on the methods used to capture contaminants: exterior hoods, receiving hoods, and exhaust enclosures. 1, record 94, English, - receiving%20hood
Record number: 94, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Receiving hoods are positioned to catch contaminants that are discharged from an operation in a predictable direction. Examples of receiving hoods include canopies located over a hot process in which hot exhaust fumes rise to the hood level by their own buoyancy, and hoods located adjacent to grinding wheels to catch the stream of dust generated by the spinning wheel. 1, record 94, English, - receiving%20hood
Record number: 94, Textual support number: 3 CONT
Receiving hoods are designed to exhaust air at the same rate as the airflow created by the process by which the contaminants are generated. If the receiving hood is not sized properly, problems such as overloading and spillage will result. 1, record 94, English, - receiving%20hood
Record number: 94, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Receiving hoods may physically resemble capture hoods, but they differ with respect to the principle used for contaminant capture. Capture hoods operate at a higher flow rate to generate the air velocities necessary to capture contaminants from a source some distance from the hood opening. Receiving hoods, on the other hand, are positioned to catch the stream of contaminants delivered to them by forces intrinsic to the operation. 1, record 94, English, - receiving%20hood

Fumes are very small, airborne, solid particles formed by the cooling of a hot vapour. For example, a hot zinc vapour may form when zinc-coated steel is welded. The vapour then condenses to form fine zinc fume as soon as it contacts the cool surrounding air. Fumes are smaller than dusts and are more easily breathed into the lungs. 1, record 100, English, - zinc%20fume
