CONT

Motor nerves in the peripheral nervous system carry information from the brain to the body. Scientists came up with the name "motor" because the first motor nerves studied were those that help with muscle movement, or what scientists call motor function. It was later discovered that motor nerves have other purposes in addition to making muscles move. They also send messages from the brain and the spinal cord to body organs. For example, motor nerves help the process of digestion by stimulating cells in the stomach to break down food chemically.

We view ppGpp [guanosine 5’-diphosphate 3’-diphosphate] as a signal molecule which indicates to the cell an imbalance or deficiency in amino-acid supply. It is thus analogous in function to cAMP which indicates to the cell a deficiency in "fuel" availability. This type of signal molecule, which we call an alarmone(...) serves to reorient the cell' s economy in response to stress in a particular area of metabolism.

Given a set S, the indicator function J(x) is classically defined as being such that J(x)=1 when x S, and J(x)=0 when X S. When S is a Cantor set, a Sierpinski lattice(gasket or carpet), a fractal net, or any one of several other classes of fractals, J(x) is inconvenient. I often find it more convenient to replace J(x) by a different function C(x), which I introduced and now propose to call coindicator.

To describe operators and actions, we first have to give them names. In what follows, we use the ternary function symbol M to designate the move operator, we use the binary function symbol U to designate the unstack operator, we use the binary function symbol S to designate the stack operator, and we use the constant Noop to designate the null action. With this vocabulary, we can name individual actions. For example, the term M(C, A, B) designates the action of moving block c from a to b. We call terms of this form action designators.

The British device is described officially as a Laser True Airspeed System(LATAS) ;it might be more accurate to call it a "potential" or "future" airspeed measuring system, since its function is to advise the pilot what his airspeed will be when he traverses a zone located a short distance ahead of his current position at any given moment. Normally this distance is in the 500-600 m range, far enough ahead at normal approach speeds of 360-450 km/h(200-250kn) to give the pilot some four to six seconds warning to recognize an impending change in true airspeed [due to turbulence] and to take any necessary corrective action.

CONT
