Registre à décalage avec rétroaction linéaire [est] une variante [de registre à décalage] avec une unité logique ou arithmétique. Le ou les bit(s) en sortie du registre subissent une série d'opérations et de transformations pour être réinsérés dans le registre. Ce type de registre est utilisé en cryptographie pour les implantations matérielles de certains algorithmes de chiffrement de flot.

Les canaux cachés couramment utilisés sont la consommation de puissance du circuit intégré, son rayonnement électromagnétique ou bien la diffusion de chaleur à l'extérieur du circuit. Dans tous les cas, le principe est similaire, un circuit oscillant de petite taille (oscillateurs en anneau ou bien un registre à décalage avec rétroaction linéaire ou LFSR (acronyme de l'anglais «linear feedback shift register»)), module une information sur le canal sélectionné.
