In opposition to Chomsky, who(as I noted) pays little attention to how his derivations might be realized by an individual speaker operating under "real-world" constraints, Bresnan and her colleagues have fashioned a perspective designed to illuminate how an individual will perceive or produce language. In her lexical-functional theory, there is no transformational component. The information traditionally embedded in the syntactic components is now placed in the individual' s lexicon-one's knowledge of specific words. Lexical-functional grammar provides each sentence with two structures : a constituent structure, which is similar to a surface structure(or phrase-marker tree) in the standard theory of Chomsky; and a functional structure, which includes all the grammatical relations relevant to the semantic interpretation of the sentence. The functional structure is generated by annotated phrase-structure rules working in conjunction with lexical entries for the various morphemes in a sentence. 1, record 2, English, - lexical%2Dfunctional%20theory

The Zarya control module, also known by the technical term Functional Cargo Block and the Russian acronym FGB, was the first component launched for the International Space Station and provides the station's initial propulsion and power.... The U. S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means Sunrise when translated to English, is a U. S. component of the station although it was built and launched by Russia.... The Zarya module is 41. 2 feet long and 13. 5 feet wide at its widest point. It has an operational lifetime of at least 15 years. Its solar arrays and six nickel-cadmium batteries can provide an average of 3 kilowatts of electrical power. Using the Russian Kurs system, the Zarya will perform an automated and remotely piloted rendezvous and docking with the Service Module in orbit. Its docking power will accommodate Russian Soyuz piloted spacecraft and unpiloted Progress resupply spacecraft. Each of the two solar arrays is 35 feet long and 11 feet wide. The module's 16 fuel tanks combined can hold more than 6 tons of propellant. The attitude control system for the module includes 24 large steering jets and 12 small steering jets. Two large engines are available for reboosting the spacecraft and making major orbital changes. 6, record 11, English, - Zarya%20control%20module

The Zarya module now provides orientation control, communications and electrical power attached to the passive Unity module while the station awaits launch of the third component, a Russian-provided crew living quarters and early station core known as the Service Module ... The Service Module will enhance or replace many functions of the Zarya. Later in the station’s assembly sequence, the Zarya module will be used primarily for its storage capacity and external fuel tanks. 6, record 11, English, - Zarya%20control%20module

Vineland Social Maturity Scale : a scale designed to assess social maturity in terms of the ability to come to terms with one's social needs and assume responsibility. Norms are available up to age twenty-five. One scale may also be used with younger or retarded people. A "social age"(SA) and a "social quotient" may be answered from the 117 items. The Vineland Social Maturity Scale, originally developed by Edgar A. Doll, represented an early attempt to measure social competence. For occasions when a student wants to understand the structure of a control component in details, STEAMER has a facility called the feedback minilab(Forbus, 1984a), where simulated devices can be assembled and tested. On the minilab's screen, the student has a menu of icons representing abstract functions typical of control devices, such as measuring subcomponents or comparators. She can select these abstract components and assemble them on the screen to construct her own control devices. The minilab is then able to generate code from subcomponent specifications to produce a simulation program for the device. Hence, once a controller has been constructed graphically in this way, it can be integrated into a simulation so that its effects on the embedding system can be observed. As implemented, the minilab has limited tutorial capabilities : it can critique the student's device by locating common bugs and recognizing some instances of known devices. Its pedagogical significance lies in its definition of abstract components in terms that allows simulated devices to be built. It is very important for students to acquire this vocabulary of functional abstractions, and the minilab helps root the abstractions’ meaning in direct experiments. 1, record 26, English, - feedback%20minilab

1, record 27, French, - d%C3%A9su%C3%A9tude%20fonctionnelle%20r%C3%A9parable
