Mxenes(pronounced "max-enes") are a novel type of two-dimensional(2D) ceramic material composed of layered nitrides, carbides, or carbonitrides of transition metals. MXenes are notable for their properties that combine aspects of both metals and ceramics. These include excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, heat resistance, easy machinability, and excellent volumetric capacitance, having the highest EMI [electromagnetic interference] shielding effectiveness of all similar synthetic 2D materials, and hydrophobic natures due to various surface functional groups. 1, record 1, English, - MXene

1, record 1, French, - MX%C3%A8ne

Living materials are a type of biohybrid material consisting of living elements and nonliving components. The living elements including bacteria, cells, fungi, and algae can endow materials with distinct functional properties, such as environmental bioremediation, in situ biosensing, biomolecular synthesis, and biomedical therapeutics. The nonliving components can protect living elements from extreme environments such as low temperature, high salinity, and water shortages. Benefiting from the combination of their respective advantages, living materials could react to the changing environmental conditions and have [a] useful function. 3, record 2, English, - engineered%20living%20material

While the concept of disruptive coloration has been standard textbook material... with applications ranging from military uniforms and equipment to art..., empirical verification of the functional mechanism underlying disruptive coloration has remained elusive for two main reasons. First, disruptive coloration invariably occurs in conjunction with background matching, so disentangling their individual contributions to camouflage is therefore challenging... Second, disruptive coloration is best defined in terms of its function(impairing recognition) rather than its appearance... 4, record 6, English, - disruptive%20coloration

Material and product design incorporating agro-based materials goes beyond applications like thatched roofs, wattle façades and other examples harking back to older days. Its goal is to use proven and new technologies and make such composites that satisfy the demanded functional specifications while containing a high degree of environmental friendliness. The first applications of agro based materials in the building industry may be found in insulation and interior decoration. The Dutch market offers insulation materials based on waste paper(including Isofloc and Isocell). Flax insulation mats are produced in the Netherlands by Eco Fiber. Hemp is another material suitable for insulation mats. Hemp is better resistant to moisture than flax. But as yet there has not been much experience with applications of this material in the building industry. The use of coconut fibers as insulation material offers several benefits such as a low energy content and high insulation value. The material is naturally highly moisture resistant. Insulation materials can be treated with halogen-free cellulose fire retardant. To preserve the material, the fibers can be treated just like wood with boric salt. Another technology is to treat cellulose fibers via the so-called PLATO(Proving Lasting Advanced Timber Option) process. This involves heating the fibers in an autoclave under 14 atmosphere pressure to about 200 degrees Celsius. In this process the lignin and the hemi-cellulose in the fiber chemically react generating a water resistant bakelite-type of resin-compound around the remaining cellulose. 2, record 10, English, - agro%2Dbased%20material

The definition of rock from an engineering or functional viewpoint is complicated by structures and defects. A rock that is hard but fractured may be easier to excavate than a softer but more coherent material. Although the fractured rock is easier to excavate, it may require bracing to support it in a deep excavation, whereas the soft rock may stand without support. 2, record 16, English, - soft%20rock

An imprecise term used to denote materials that are more coherent than soils, yet are less coherent than many rocks. Two empirical definitions are that a soft rock does not need to be excavated by blasting, and that a soft rock has an unconfined compressive strength of between 400 and 1000 kN/m². It may be noted that to the geologist all sedimentary rocks are termed soft rocks, which may lead to confusion in an engineering context, since many sedimentary rocks cannot be excavated mechanically. 3, record 16, English, - soft%20rock

Functional isomerism. Functional isomerism is a type of isomerism in which the difference is not (necessarily) in the position of the atoms, but also in their valence, or chemical nature, or both; in short, in the functional groups present. 2, record 26, English, - functional%20isomer
